nope. from what i understand (i've in college 6 yrs....switched my major from government to criminal justice and went to 3 different colleges), the word "midterm" comes from "middle of the term". imagine your teacher/professor saying, "all right, class! it's time for your middle of the term test!" that doesn't sound right. in college you're in class from mid-January to late April or mid-May (generally speaking and depends on what college). each semester is aproximately 5 months long and the midterm test is half way through the "term" or semester. the midterms are given near spring break which is 1/2 through the semester. a midterm is a test of what you've learned up to that point. a final exam is what you learned before AND after taking the midterm. i'm gratefull that the last 2 semesters (i wanted a lighter load so i was a part-time student) so my finals were on the second 1/2 of the semester, but this semester, i'm not so lucky. i am now back to full time and all finals will be based on EVERYTHING that i've learned that semester

Midterms are given about half way through the semester to either give you a grade or at least give you an idea of how you are doing in the class. Semester finals, give at the end of the semeseter, will test everything you learned in the class since day one and it may be weighted higher in regard to your other tests. I've been in classes where the final was 50% of your grade!

No. Midterm exams are given sometime during the semester. Finals are given after the end of the semester, during finals week.

nope. mid-term is what you just learn half of your studies for that period and what they teach you, currently. you need to hit the books so you can get a higher marks. just in case you falter on the finals, at least the grade averaging part is not that bad. in some kind of way, its the main portion leading you to the final.
semester finals is a combination of both. you need to refresh what you have learn and a check how much knowledge got into your ways of thinking and what register in your memory that will carry you to the next level....
