Some people sing songs in church with repeating verses in them. Some of these people the claim that another person chanting a prayer with repeating lines in it is engaged in vain idolatrous repetition. How is one ok and the other not? I realize such extremists are a minority (fortunately) but why do they freak out about minor differences?

~~~david,,,, There is a huge difference. A previous answer is flat out wrong when they contended that "anyone can chant". The thing that distinguishes a chant from a song is simply this,,,,A Chant is a Prayer Offering in a Specific Song Form or Stylization according to the local culture. A Song is about telling a story with music and words,,,within your concept it would serve to uplift the Singer(s), with Inspiration and/or Affirmation.
Not everybody can sing but anybody can chant. The purpose of chanting is to help the body come in tune with rhythm and tone through repetition so that the breathing is controlled and the result is supposed to 'psych' the body to channel its energy.
You go to the Priest for confession and he tells you to say 10 hail Marys and 10 Our Fathers. Most songs just repeat the chorus. We don't sing 1 verse over and over again 10 times. Most songs are 3 or 4 verses, then you sing something else.
Try singing the same verse over and over and over again for your mother, she'll probably smack you long side the head and tell you to be quiet. :-)
Jesus tells us not to use vain repetitions. If you talk to someone every day and say the same thing every day, eventually they won't be around for you to talk to. I kind of think that God wouldn't listen to me if I just say the same prayer over and over again. The only thing I repeat is my requests for others.
