The revolver is the probably a good start with your first gun purchase. It depends on your price range. A good start is a 38. S&W lightweight, which are perfect for personal protection. You can move up to a .357 (which also fires 38.) and get a small framed model that is hammer-less, so it fits well in a pocket without snagging on your clothes. The best thing you can do and I highly suggest this is one, follow the laws in your state to the letter. Do not break the law and carry it hidden, if it is against the law in your state. If you need a permit to do that, then get it. I also highly suggest you attend a gun safety class. It's like $50 and 3+ hours, but you'll learn a great deal about safety. With all guns, safety is the number priority at all times. I would also buy a gun safe that is DOJ approved, so kids or guest in your home cannot access the gun. Safety and follow the law at all times.

I suggest a .357 magnum, which you can also shoot .38 special out of until you learn to control the gun. A revolver requires less maintenance than an automatic and is generally more reliable. It is a good gun for people who don't enjoy shooting much and only want a reliable gun locked away or stored safely for use in home defense. A revolver might be easier for women or men who don't shoot a lot to use. A revolver can also be store ready to fire in a safer manner than an auto pistol.

If you shoot a lot or plan to carry it for protection, then an automatic in .40 S&W is probably a better choice. I suggest going to a local shooting range and rent some guns to shoot. See which ones you like.

Also consider a pump shotgun for home defense. It is a great choice.

Bound's hubby here:

Personally, I believe a revolver is an excellent choice for self-protection, even though I prefer the .45. The revolver has many pluses these include ease of operation, a wider variety of bullet/load choices, usually two firing modes (single action and double action) and they can be left loaded over long periods of time without fear of magazine spring fatigue.

Revolvers typically do not have safeties that have to be fiddled with. They do not have de-cocking levers nor dissassembly levers nor magazine releases that could be activated in the dark or in high stress situations. Typically, you can load a revolver and set it aside with little or no attention until you need it.

With revolvers you can switch between lead and jacketed bullets or full wadcutters, semi-wadcutters, soft points or hollow points without fear of malfunction depending on your pistol's use at the moment. You can also shoot target loads, service/protection loads, or hunting loads without fear of throwing off your pistol's timing.

You have two trigger modes. In single action mode you have a light, crisp trigger which can be used for precision placement of your shot. All the while you also have a long, heavier double action pull available to you which is more conducive to deliberate or high stress defensive shooting.

Once you drop five or six rounds into the cylinder you can close it and forget it for years, if need be because there are no springs holding the ammunition at the ready.

Bottom line, I believe revolvers are very good for self-defense because they require a more deliberate act to fire and less chance of an accidental discharge.

Good luck.

A revolver is a perfectly good choice as a defensive weapon. Pick the right caliber and ammo type and it will serve you well.

If you live in bear country you are going to be better off with a revolver and six .44 Mag. rounds than a Beretta .380 with thirteen or fourteen rounds. If you are a city dweller and just need something for home defense, a .38 Chief's Special with five rounds of pre-fragments .38s is fine.

Just depends on what you need and always practice good gun safety.

A revolver is a very valid choice for protection. For safety a modern double action revolver is one of the safest guns you can get. For reliability, revolvers have few moving parts and are less likely to malfunction. As for ease of use, there are no safeties to worry about, just aim and shoot. From a legal defensable standpoint a revolver looks less "evil" to an unknowledgeable jury.

The main things are;
1. to get training on when and how to use it,
2. to learn how to clean and maintain it
3. practice
4. practice
5. practice

There are benefits to a Semi-Auto as well, which is what I carry (1911 clone)

Revolvers are a great choice for self protection. They are much more reliable than autos. They will generally work when dirty and banged up. Revolvers don't jam or lock up. There are less parts to worry about for one thing. They are much easier to clean and you don't have to take the thing apart to clean it. If you want a gun that you can count on working first time every time when you need it the most. I would count on a revolver. Specifically a .357.

If you are more familiar with weapons and pistols though, a magazine fed semiauto could offer more lead downrange with faster reloads. Though "One hundred misses is not firepower, One hit is." (don't remember who said that)

Revolvers are great for home/concealed protection.

Pros:
* Typically come in higher calibers than automatics
* Very reliable, not many moving parts
* Small and compact even with large caliber bullets
* Accurate and simple to use
* Less expensive

Cons:
* Low bullet capacity
* Tend to be heavier
* Slower rate of fire for the average shooter

Never a jam just a misfire do to bad primer, power, etc. A little out dated by my opinion because you only have 6 rounds (standard on most revolvers) as a semi-auto pistol could hold up to 18 rounds if within your states law.

All of my Glock's (G35s & G23) magazines hold 15 rounds of 40 S&Ws.

It is optimal if you are not a someone who routinely "checks up" on a gun for maintenance purposes. Even some auto gurus admit that they use a revolver for basic self-defense. Autos are often overmarketed and oversold, and this opinion is coming to you from a 1911 man.

Absolutely. In civilian life, you're never going to be assaulted by a platoon of bad guys. One of the old Texas Rangers was once ribbed about keeping his 38/40 revolver when everybody else had gone to autoloaders. His position was that if he couldn't stop a fight with five shots, it was time to run anyway.
