2 Corinthians 11:2 "For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ." Paul is writting to the church in Corinth and refers to them as a bride (woman).

The woman clothed with the sun is God's pure church. The sun is the new gospel area arising in it's full glory. The moon reflects the sun - it is the mosaic law that will be done away with at the crucifiction.

The crown of 12 stars represents the apostles who began the spread of the gospel to enlighten the world.

It can't be Mary because Rev 12 is symbolic and involves a much bigger picture.

The woman represents God's faithful people (his church) who have been waiting for the Messiah; the crown of 12 stars represents the 12 tribes of Israel.

Rev 19:7 Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the lamb has come, and his bride (his church) has made herself ready.

Rev 22:17 The Spirit and the bride say, "Come" And let him who hears say, "Come!" And let him who hears say. "Come!" Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.
Both the Holy Spirit and the bride, the church, extend the invitation to all the world to come to Jesus and experience the joys of salvation in Christ.
