The term is not interchangeable. To be a Fundamentalist it to take things literally and to be as an individual or as a group stuck at a Latency age in mental development. At this stage the child sees things in black and white. Everyone must follow the rules. You see this behavior in children who are between 6 to 12. Some adult stay at this level their whole life. Religious points of view that fit their mental age are the "Fundamental" ones. This means the basics of the faith, the entry point. I would love to see people evolve past this. Fundamentalist often become Extremist when they take their POV into the rest of the world.

About 100 years ago a famous preacher wrote a paper on "fundamentals", and while he was right on many points, he was wrong on some, and that is what the term came from. In other words, if you are a true follower of Scripture, you are NOT a fundamentalist, and if you are totally a fundamentalist, YOU ARE A PAGAN!

He's not a fundamentalist. The group of Muslims who attacked on 9/11 and who are killing thousands of their own countrymen in the middle east are fundamentalists.

Absolutely.
If the term fundamentalist was referring to the Christians who follow the teachings of Jesus then it would mean people who love one another and pray for their enemies and eat and drink with sinners while they tell of the great things Jesus has done in their lives.
ROFL! I hope that I resemble the latter.
GOD bless you man!

I was under the impression that fundamentalist=crazy. That is based solely on empirical evidence and does not massage the prejudices of any group in particular.

No, I think in the original Greek, "fundamentalist" meant "one who shouts irrelevant cliches unprevokedly".
If fundamentalists were extrememists, they'd be carrying the mission of Christ to the extreme. However, they really have nothing to do with Christ.

I think so. To me the word conjures up a mental image of a bigot, hypocrite and fanatical zealot.
