india then okinowa, not japan.and it wasn't during the jap.occupation it was when okinowa was ran by the chinese and the japanese.they were forbidden to carry steel weapons or be armed in any way.thats why they made lots of different systems of which karate is one.thats also where wooden weapons were developed mainly from farm implements.they were only allowed to carry the tools of there trade hence the devolpment of many different weapons from common trades and labouring jobs.hmm i wonder what a nanny would have carried?lol.
EDIT>KARATE DID NOT COME FROM JAPAN THE JAPANESE
STOLE IT FROM OKINOWA>

Most scholars and researchers agree that the origin of Karate-do, as we Know it today, came from Kerala in South India through a Martial Art form called "KALARYPYATT.It was taken to China by a Buddhist Monk known as "BHOOI DHARIVIA" during 50QAD. In China, he founded the Shaolin Monastery, where it was changed to the term "Wu-Shu" or Chinese Martial Arts From the 10th Century onwards, when trade developed between China and Japan, it was allowed to do so only through the island of Okinawa. Thus the Chinese Ambassadors and Emissaries, started teaching the people of Okinawa the techniques of 'Wu-Shu" which was later changed to 'KARATE".

Real Karate is from Japan, Karate-Do is from Okinawa. All martial arts originated in India, then a monk migrated to China where it was further developed in to Gung Fu or Kung Fu as it is pronounced in English. From China it spread out to different parts of the Asial continent. In Japan where is became Karate, Korea where it is called Tae Kwon Do.
Nothing, and I mean NOTHING beats traditional Gung Fu.

Okinawa during the Japanese occupation. The Japanese didn't allow the natives to have weapons so they learned to protect themselves without weapons & using farm implements such as nomchucks (used gor pounding grain into flour), kama (used to cut grain) & sai (a hand held pitchfork).
