Karate is a term meaning Un-armed combat- Its is made up of two Characters from the Chinese language, which is also used by the Japanese in writing form called Kanji. The first character "KARA", means "Empty", and the second character means "Hand", thus "Empty Hand" or a system of self Defense without the use of weapons. It is interesting to note that when "Karate' was first introduced to Okinawa, it used to mean "Chinese Hands', and It was only after its Introduction in Japan, was the first character changed to mean “empty" instead of "Chinese".

Karate is the Japanese name for the collective group of Martial Arts that were developed in Japan and Okinawa.
Kara means open or empty, and Te means hand or roughly translated into "unarmed combat"
Many of the techniques in Karate were derived from the Chinese Martial Arts, and were developed or "evoved" into the Japanese disciplines by their respective founders as they are today. often by taking these techniques and blending them with the traditional discipline of Budo.

Karate (空手, Karate?) (listen (help·info)) or karate-dō (空手道, karate-dō?) is a martial art that developed from a synthesis of indigenous Ryukyuan fighting methods and southern Chinese martial arts. "Karate" originally meant Tang hand, i.e. Chinese hand, which was later changed to a homonym meaning 'empty hand' in Japanese. It is known primarily as a striking art, featuring punching, kicking, knee/elbow strikes and open handed techniques. However, grappling, joint manipulations, locks, restraints/traps, throws and vital point striking also appear in karate.
