Great Pyrenees would be good. I had one, they are protectors and herders. My dog would take care of all the animals that were ours and chase off any that weren't. I had to give him away when I moved though, a man took him that has a farm with goats and last I talked to him my dog was the perfect farm dog. These dogs are great because they are protective without being vicious. They will chase off other animals or people out of their area and then leave them alone, they don't continue on trying to kill them. They are also very large dogs, I love big dogs. They are usually mostly white, mine was solid white but some have big brown spots too, and something about how the fur is that's close to their skin is like insulation to keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. ( just letting you know so that if you get one and its hot in the summer you won't make the mistake of shaving its fur real short like I did). They are awesome dogs. If a stranger came into the yard he would stand between me and the stranger until he saw I knew the person and it was no threat. Every one Ive ever been around or heard about has been the same way also.

Don't rush getting a new pet. I would suggest the whole family go out together to look and mabye adopt a new pet. I would say you should get the same breed of dog as your old dog so you are experienced wth the breed, or a breed of dog similar to the characteristics of your old dog's breed. For example: If you had a yorkie or a small dog, I wouldn't reccomend a getting a large breed like a retriever that needs lots more exersize, food, and living space. Take your time in choosing what kind of dog is best for your family and comsider if your dog will be happier in a big country house or will if be fine is an apartment home?

Generally answering you question, lots of dogs will be happy on a farm, but I think bigger dogs like st bernard, great dane, Collie, and spaniels need lots of exersize and terefore a large, spacious home and feild to run in would suit them best.

Good luck with a new dog!!!

How sad. I bet you miss your dog.

Put the fact that you live on a farm aside. What are things that you'd like in a dog? It will be you best friend for years to come. Think about what you'd like to have in a dog and write those things down. Do you want a big or little dog? Do you want to have to spend a lot of time grooming the dog or one you can easily hose off? Do you want the dog to be able to go with you on bike rides? You might need a larger dog that can go for long runs. Do you like to hunt? Would you want your dog to go hunting with you? Is a tail important? Think about these things, and it will help you to find the dog you want. Also think about you. What kind of dog would like you most? Are you a couch potato or into sports? Are you quiet and laid back or outrageous? If you're outrageous, a Yorkie might just stand in the corner and shake. Your dog's activity level should be similar to yours too.

Depends. Are you ready for another dog? What size was your dog? Do you have room for a large dog? You don't give much information. Many dogs are good, research them first for size, temperament, etc. If you want a really affectionage dog, you can't beat great danes. We have two and they are just so affectionate. But then again, you may not have room. If you want playful, then schnauzers are good. It just depends what you're life style will handle. Good luck. We lost a dog about a month ago and I know it's very painful. I hope the one fills the void.

Why not go to the humane society or local animal shelter? There are lots of animals out there that need happy homes. What you need to do is meet them and pick the specific dog you want, not a breed in general. And if you rescue one then you will have saved it from a life of loneliness, or from being put to sleep. You may meet one that's sad because his person died recently and left him all alone, so the two of you would be able to help each other heal. Try checking out http://www.petfinder.com/

You can never replace your lost pet but another good choice for a "NEW" pet and one that would be great on a farm is a Queensland Heeler. They are great with animals and kids. Smart and loyal, these dogs are great companions and will actually work on the farm herding and guarding the other animals.

don't rush. if you are feeling sad about it a good song to listen to is Death of a Martian, by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, two of them lost thier dogs and they wrote the song about the dogs. A good breed for a farm would be a corgi or an australlian sheperd

i don't think of you'll discover free pups everywhere. the most ideal aspect to do is examine canines shelters and breed particular canines rescues, they from time to time have pups yet even then it basically isn't free. What ever you do, do not get a canines from a puppy keep (or from people promoting pups on line for that count number) ! they have been bred in the worst that you'll imagine circumstances.
