My license was suspended in WA for DUI four years ago. I have lived in Arizona for the past two years, and do not live or drive in Washington. The period of suspension has expired, but I am waiting for "clearance" from the state of Washington. I have Arizona insurance already and faxed proof to the courts in Washington. The problem is, now they are saying that they need proof that I am insured in Washington also. My insurance company said they cant do this since I neither live nor drive in Washington. I think someone there is giving me incorrect information. Does anyone work at the WA Court or licensing bureau or have you been through this? Why are they asking for insurance in a state that I no longer live or drive?

To clarify, it is the washington courts /washington licensing dept asking for proof that I am covered in WA. I do not have my AZ license yet...it will be a new AZ license. But WA is holding up the process. I understand that I should be covered in all states with my AZ insurance, but the WA courts want specific proof that I am insured in WA.

You are a legal resident of the State of Arizona? That is you vote and pay taxes in that state.
I don't see how the State of Washington can require you to do anything. You have satisfied the conditions of your sentence.
If you have the required liability insurance in Arizona, then your liability insurance is going to cover you where ever drive to. Your coverage is not going to stop if you leave the state.
I think you are getting bad information from Washington and your insurance company.

Leasia's comment on her license - - - Every state requires you to be licensed to drive in the state you live in. If you move from one state to the another, you have to get a new driver's license for the new state. Some state's require you to get the lic. right away others will wait for the old state lic. to expire.

You have insurance for Arizona, do you have a drivers license from Arizona--If so I believe you are covered. Insurance doesn't stop just because you drive outside of the state you got the insurance in, so I think you are right, someone is giving you incorrect information. You might have to get a lawyer to handle this mess. You've done your time, now you want to put all the mess behind you.

If you're new insuance company is asking for it, its because they wanted to make sure that you had continuing coverage for the entire time. If there was a break in coverage, your new insurance company can charge higher rates.

If the AZ DMV is asking for it, they wanted to make sure you had insuance in WA while you were convicted of the DUI. AND that you cleared up any fines/jail time/probation BEFORE they will issue you an AZ license.

Most state DMV's computers are now linked to avoid people who have been convicted of crimes to bounce between states and obtain new licenses before clearing up fines/jail time.

Hope that helps.
