Both computers running XP are unable to communicate with scanner.

USB 2.0 is supposed to be backward compatiable with USB 1.0
As mentioned in the first answer, you may need to install new drivers for the scanner. You not mention the Brand and Model. So, search for (example) {Compaq Scanner 2092} support and go to the manufacture web-site and look for "Downloads" or "Drivers" and try.

yes, u can, but u have not tell us what is the problem.

un plug the scanner

install the software ,

when u restart the computer, plug the usb and turn on the scanner.

Are you sure the device is not damaged? Also try installing the device drivers (from the original CD?) BEFORE you plug it in.
