We have recently gotton a puppy and do not want my home to smell like a dog. Sometimes when you go into someone's home that has dogs there is an odor. How do you prevent that from happening.

As many others have mentioned, keep you puppy clean- bathe him/her regularly.
Wash the puppy's bedding (make sure to use a gentle detergent).
Keep up with house cleaning- regularly dust, vacuum, sweep and mop, try to keep pets off of furniture, pick up any accidents immediately. We use Odoban at the grooming shop where I work. We also use it at home.

Beware of using Pine-Sol, though because Pinesol and it's fumes can be highly toxic to pets. It can cause the inside of the throat and nose to burn and cause severe permanent damage to the throat and lungs.

Well.you're probably going to get some smell whatever you do because it's only natural for dogs to give off an odor in the same way as we all do.
So in effect your job is going to be minimizing the problem and here are a few tips.
1) Keep puppy clean as possible, bathing him when necessary but not overdoing this as his coat will dry out.
2)Keep his bedding clean and regularly washed
3) Keep him off all furniture-his smell will permeate into all fabrics.
4) Make sure his food bowls are always clean and clear away any unfinished food.
Doggy food smells worse than doggy if lying around.
5)Keep puppies toys out in the garden/yard when possible
6) Use air freshener when needed
7) Keep dog out of bedrooms-that at least cuts down the number of rooms he's going to leave his aroma in.

I agree with the first answer. keeping your dog clean, keeping the floors and furniture clean will keep from having "dog smell" in the house. ALSO, clean up any accidents immediately. Use "Zero odor pet" or some other enzyme type cleaner to remove the smell so your dog won't go back to the same spot. Use puppy pads to train your puppy so he won't go on the floor. There's no need for your house to smell anything but sweet. Mine does!

The reason some people's houses smell like dogs is because they don't potty train their dogs, they don't keep their dogs clean, and they don't keep their house clean.
I have seven dogs - all of them spend part of their time in my house.
I bathe ALL of my dogs weekly. They are all house trained, and if I can't be with them - they are kept on a tile floor. Just in case they have an accident, then it won't be on the carpet - no odor.
I also clean my house at least once a week. I use Clorox Cleanup on all the tile floors since this leaves a nice smell & also disinfects.
Good luck!

Keep your dogs bedding clean, Vacume everyday. Use yummy smelling carpet cleaner. Invest in some febreeze. If you keep him and his areas nice and clean then there shouldn't be a problem. I have 3 dogs and I still can make sure It doesn't smell like dogs.

oh and keep your dog off of your furniture. The smell will get embedded into it and its really hard to get it out.

They have doggie wipes that you swab your dog with between baths and our dog loves the attention and they smell great! Frebreeze Odor eliminator is also great for carpet and covered furniture. Wash the dog's bedding with baking soda added to the regular clothes soap.

I just got a puppy & know how your feeling. If they make a "mess" on the floor clean it up real quick & dump some Pine-Sol or something along those lines and scrub on it for a few minutes. When you are vacuuming make sure you buy a power like Carpet Fresh for Pets and dump it on the carpet and wait 5 minutes and vacuum it up. And use a Febreeze made for Pet espically to spray on your furniture, and always make sure your pet is clean and bathed! & that should work always!
