It could be lots of different things... It's hard to even guess without seeing it. If you have a vet appointment, though, I wouldn't panic.
My one dog's skin often "erupts" with a similar sounding, sticky/scabby problem -- and, for some reason, it tends to get worse at this time of year. Over the past couple of years, he has been to the vet several times for this problem, and we have *yet* to get a definitive diagnosis, although the vet suspects that it's some sort of bacterial thing (it gets scabby, flaky and sticky and sort of smelly, in little dime-size patches, that expand in area, if we don't catch it). Usually, the vet puts him on antibiotics -- sometimes for *many* weeks; truth be told, I'm not entirely sure that the antibiotics work on this particular "affliction". What seems more effective (at least to my mind) is the antibacterial shampoo and lotion that the vet usually prescribes; when he has a flare-up, we bathe him w/ these prescription shampoos every week, and this *usually* keeps it under control. Right now, his skin is just beginning to "erupt" again, and I think that I'll be trying a new vet to see if *they* have any definitive answers.
Anyhow, all of this is just to say "don't panic". As long as you will be seeing a vet in the very near future, you should be okay; you do need to see a vet, though, to determine what it is and how you should treat it. (By the way, if your dog does happen to have a problem similar to my dog's problem, this weird skin ailment has never spread to my other dogs, so we all figure that it isn't a contagious problem.). Good luck!
P.S. (Added): When and if you get a diagnosis, could you let us know what it is? I'd be curious to find out if there are other avenues/possibilities/routes that I should be pursuing with my dog. We moved to this area a couple of years ago, and I have yet to find a vet here who instills me w/ confidence. :)

Could be mange or ringworm.
The vet can tell you for sure.
I wouldn't worry about it too much - as long as you get him to the vet ASAP.

Just keep it clean until you get to the vet. He'll have to do tests to determine exactly what the problem is.

it could be mange, which is very contagious and fatal if not treated, keep him away from other dogs and get him to a vet asap!
