The problem with the Amtrak idea is, that you will have to go through Cleveland Ohio, then to Buffalo and make a connection there to Toronto ON, a shorter route is to take the train to Detroit, then get the Greyhound bus connection to Windsor ON, there you can connect with VIA rail ( the bus terminal is a short cab or bus ride from the train station), the Canadian version of Amtrak ,and get a train to Toronto.
You will save about 8 hours travel time and a fair chunk of change money wise, I will give you the Via website connect to check on times to connet in Windsor, it is a 3hr & 45min trip.
I worked and had friends in Windsor and have taken the train many times, there use to be a train from Toronto to Chicago, via Sarnia ON, but the discontinued it, and I have checked Amtrak's schedule for the fastest route and that is the route setup they return for the trip to Toronto
