My daughter has had an unspecified virus for 6 days. Vomitting, diarrhea and fever. She lost 2 pounds (weighs 31) and ended up at the hospital for iv rehydration last night. Her doctors orders stated that she was to receive 3 bags of fluids. She only got about 1 1/2 bags because the "clinic" part of the hospital that does this treatment was closing and didn't have time to give her the rest! She was acting cheerful and singing for the last 20 minutes of treatment, so I guess they felt comfortable discharging her. I wasn't worried because she was so happy. On the way home she vomitted and over night she had diarrhea. She woke up very lethargic, grumpy, and went back to sleep after only 2 hours awake. She is keeping down pedialyte today...small amounts every 30 minutes. Should I just let the virus run it's course?

I have never heard of a stomach bug lasting for 6 days. I would take her back and see if they can do some testing to see if its food poisoning or something like that. Has anyone else in the house gotten sick?? If not, then I would suspect something else. I would definitely go back to the E.R.

Did they give her medication for the vomiting and diarrhea?
If they did, most of that medication makes a little one very tired and grumpy.
If shes keeping down pedialyte, give her a little more time to just hang out in bed and rest.
If she starts throwing up again, or has diarrhea very soon after drinking the pedialyte, take her back to the doc.
The viruses that have been going around this year have been awful, the stomach bugs just seem to hang on much longer than average.
Make sure shes keeping fluids in her, keep her comfy, and if she has a fever use some baby motrin or whatever you know works for her. I think the virus will run its course, just may take a little more time than you expected.
