if you have a windows based PC then you already have all you need to rip a music CD! DVDs however are a diferent story, you can not do this legally the copyprotection on store bought comercial DVDs is designed to prevent you from doing this.
windows media player can rip your music CDs to your computer for you. But there is no legal way to do the same for your DVD movies unless you own the copyright and the media does not have any form of DRM installed on the disc. (as far aas i am aware)
the best freeware site I have found is http://www.softpedia.com a very wide range of software tools and utilities for almost any occasion. if you know what you want to do.
good luck.

The BEST website i know of, is www.mininova.org. It's a torrent program, so you have to have a torrent extractor like 'Azureus'(the website will refer you to some, or just google Azureus) Best of all, it's a clean site!
(Also, the best ripping programs i know of, are called MAGIC DVD Ripper, and MAGICBIT DVD Ripper. Work like a charm!)
Have fun:D
