Like in the screwtape letters, does everyone have a (or some) demon(s) assigned to them to try to destroy them?

Actually, its not a weird question at all!
There is no actual Bible verse that says that we have a demon assigned to each of us, because we simply don't. I didn't see the "screwtape letters", so I can't comment on that.
However, in the Scriptures, there are many descriptions of demons, or better said - devils - who possess people. There is not one hiding under every bush, but we should keep aware that there is a spiritual war going on, and there are satans little helpers out there to mess you up, if you are a believer - if you aren't, they already have you, so they don't bother you.
Thats why when someone is a believer, it seems like bad things constantly come their way; they will do anything and everything to keep you from being in service to God.
I think someone already listed the hundreds of verses where a devil had possessed someone, so i won't repeat that, but this I will tell you:
Luke 10 tells us that thru the name of Jesus Christ we have the power over all of our spiritual enemies. They will run like hell from us, if that power is used; if not, they'll run over you like a mack truck.
James 4:7 - resist the devil and he will flee.

The Screwtape Letters written by C.S.Lewis is an analogy of how the devil works to deceive people. It says in the Bible that the devil wanders the earth to seek " whom" he may destroy. I am sure that C.S. Lewis who was a brilliant intellectual did His research well when he wrote this particular book. An analogy is like a parable, an example of how a law or rule works. In this case he was showing how the powers and principalities of the air, work in the spiritual realm of earth. If you read the book of Job you will see an example of how Satan makes a suggestion to prove to God that Job is not as faithful to God as he seems. God puts limits on Satan about how much he can test Job. We don't know how Satan actually did all the things he did to Job but most likely he had demons helping him.

The Bible does talk about demons but no definite assignment. Now King Saul who was later replaced by David, the Bible states in 1 Samuel chapter 16:14,23 says that the spirit of God left Saul and that an evil spirit of the Lord came upon him and troubled him. So apparently God determines who shall be appointed demons but cannot say if all have evil spirits appointed to them. In 1 Kings 22:19-23 we see a heavenly spirit answering Gods call to be a lying spirit causing the prophets of God to lie to Ahab to bring about his destruction. This throws a whole new outlook on demon possesion and wether it is of God or the Devil.

Isaiah 45:7 " I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and CREATE EVIL: I the Lord do all these things." People all too often do not give God credit and glory for His works thinking that he would not do things like that. Do not underestimate God.

I don't think we have demons assigned to us. If we know Jesus as our Saviour then the demons have no control over us. I have found that the more we try to know God and the more we love Jesus, all those other problems are forgotten. Until this question, I haven't even thought of a demon for years.

Use a concordance programme with the Bible text in plain text format.

I suspect not. The Screwtape Letters was a marvelous story, of course, but it is fiction.
