I am thinking of buying a ranch house which has an unattached 1 car garage basically taking up a big chunk of backyard. There is plenty of room on the side of the house for the garage. What would be involved in moving the garage forward closer to the street, costs and such. Has anyone accomplished anything like this? How? What would it cost to demolish the garage and rebuild one on the side of the house?

thanks
I assume the garage is on a concrete slab? If I demolish the

thanks

Do what my son-in law did... he didn't ask permission about anything.

He bought a garage for $200.00 that was going to be torn down
to make way for an overpass. He, took a wrecker and someway
got it on a flatbed trailer and pulled it about two miles.
He put it on the side of his house, attached it.

My daughter about died when she seen him coming down the street with it..LOL

The funny part, no one ever noticed it being there..

Moving A Garage Cost

In some rare cases they can move the slab too. They drill a hole in the center and pick it up by crane. It's not difficult to move a building to a new slab. Bu then you must have the old one (slab)demolished or live with it as an eyesore. They just run a line of timbers around the circumference inside of the garage, knock a few holes in the walls below the boards against the walls and place beams all the way through to jack it up with. I had an entire slab house moved this way across town. I left the slab and had it destroyed.

assuming the garage is on a monolythic slab ,or on a foundation ,its not moveable.the best thing is to disassemble the garage, saving as much material as possible and reconstruct it at a new site

Gotta check with the town for position restrictions to the property line for structures... if that's ok, the cost will be about $50 per square foot for demo and about the same to re-build... moving it would be pretty dear too.

First DO'NT DO ANYTHING UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND YOUR ZONING AND BUILDING CODES! Jacking up a small garage and putting it on a trailer isn't that hard.
