The Islam religion was founded by Mohammed in the seventh century. In 622 he founded the first Islamic state, a theocracy in Medina, a city in western Saudi Arabia located north of Mecca. There are two branches of the religion he founded.
The Sunni branch believes that the first four caliphs--Mohammed's successors--rightfully took his place as the leaders of Muslims. They recognize the heirs of the four caliphs as legitimate religious leaders. These heirs ruled continuously in the Arab world until the break-up of the Ottoman Empire following the end of the First World War.
Shiites, in contrast, believe that only the heirs of the fourth caliph, Ali, are the legitimate successors of Mohammed. In 931 the Twelfth Imam disappeared. This was a seminal event in the history of Shiite Muslims. According to R. Scott Appleby, a professor of history at the University of Notre Dame, "Shiite Muslims, who are concentrated in Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon, [believe they] had suffered the loss of divinely guided political leadership" at the time of the Imam's disappearance. Not "until the ascendancy of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1978" did they believe that they had once again begun to live under the authority of a legitimate religious figure.
Another difference between Sunnis and Shiites has to do with the Mahdi, “the rightly-guided one” whose role is to bring a just global caliphate into being. As historian Timothy Furnish has written, "The major difference is that for Shi`is he has already been here, and will return from hiding; for Sunnis he has yet to emerge into history: a comeback v. a coming out, if you will."
Hope this helps!

Here is a good article:
Sunnis vs. Shi'ites
An Outline Of The Differences Between The Sunnis and The Shi'ite in Matters of Faith And Doctrine
http://islamawareness.net/Deviant/Shia/sunni_vs_shia.html
note:
With reference to the use of the terms "Sunni and Shi'ite" Muslims prefer to simply be called "Muslim". One is either Muslim or not. There is no such thing as a Shi'ite Muslim. The Term Sunni is used here to denote those who Practice Islam according to Authentic Traditional Islamic sources, not to indicate that Shi'ite and Sunni's are both Muslims. Shi'ism is a separate religion and should be regarded as such.

Well, there is a very big difference. But you must know that is shiaa, there are so many branches, but i'll tell you what most of them say.
1- shyaa are not muslims, they don't believe in mohamed(pbuh), they believe that angel gobriel, have mistaken and that he was meant tom go to Ali.
2- they have their own, Quran , which they have either made up or change from the original one.
3- Some of them went really extreme and believed that Ali is a god, and that his properties (of god) are given to his sons!!!
4- they believe that one day one of ali's son's will come and make them rule the earth ( El mahdy el montazar)
5- All what they said were after the death of the prophet mohamed (pbuh), when they wanted ali to be the next muslim leader instead of abu bakr. and most of who said or believed in these sayings were doing it to destroy and minipulate islam.
6- some of them believe in heaven and so, but others have same believes like in the budhism.
Want to tell you that there are nothing in the written history that can confirme what they say.
But sonnie are the typical muslims, if u don't know about them here are some thoughts:
1- Believe in one god , his prophet mohamed (pbuh){ Believe in all prophets, ibrahim, moses, jesus,....}
2- Believe in heaven and hell
3- surely they have the original quran ( which says that mohamed is the prophet of god, which really showd the shyaa they were wrong, and from what they started saying that mohamed have changed it.
( There are no groups in islam, just muslims, so sonnie or soffie , same believes)
hope i helped
