When they tell you to be more assertive they want you to be more confident in what your doing. First is knowledge, know your local and state laws, show the Officer your riding with this by asking questions or having him ask you questions and impress him with your answers.
Show your partner your confidence on your calls to service and traffic stops, don't ask questions that you already know the answers to, this makes you look stupid.
Yes I know you may feel unsure about yourself, but be "Assertive" and take action, your partner will let you know if your doing something wrong.

Don't be a know-it-all...ask lots of questions and follow directions...also, as another poster said, try and spend some time working in the booking area of the jail, that way you can deal with "customers" in a controlled environment before hitting the streets. When you are on the street, if you don't know what you are doing, ask someone, don't just assume. Oh and one other thing...please *don't* flash your badge off duty to get out of a speeding ticket or impress the girlies!! I know some reservists (and some full-time cops) who do this and it is very unprofessional! ;-)

Just remember, each day will be a learning experience. Use common sense & wear your uniform proudly, remembering to always be professional. Never use your uniform or your badge, as a means to get yourself out of a rough spot or throw your weight around. You'll always be in the public spotlight, so earn the respect you deserve & that will come in time. You will no doubt go out on the road with a senior officer who will train you for a while. Never be afraid to ask questions, as that's how you learn. You'll learn how to book the inmates in & again, ask questions. Always strive to keep yourself mentally, physically, & morally fit & you'll do fine. In your career as a police officer, you will arrest many but remember, you are neither their judge or their jury, you are here to uphold the law, & most will go before the judge & or jury after your job is done.
I worked in an all male prison at one time & learned a lot from my sons before my employment at the prison began. I attended an academy & learned a lot of what you will soon learn. So much of what I learned & what you will learn will come from hands on experience. All the best to you!

Pay attention to geography in your area. This was my biggest challenge. Since I only went out on patrol for a couple shifts a week, it took me alot longer to learn street names and the quickest way through the city to get to the hot calls.

The only thing worst then a rookie is a free police rookie. Don't try to solve all the city, county or states crimes in your first shift. do as much as you can but check by on as many scene as you can and just watch don't talk just watch how things are done.

See if they will let you spend some of your monthly time in the jail. That way you can get to know some of the people you might be dealing with, When you go out on patrol.

When you pull a guy over for speeding, don't yank him out of the car and start beating him on camera.
Turn the camera off, first.
