The question should be has he given you a reason to think otherwise? When a man says to you with out hesitation that he loves you and cares a lot about you reguardless of what type of work that he does then he most likely means it and you will know by his facial expressions and his body language. Just keep and open mind and know that he may be thinking of you every chance that he gets and that he would hope the same out of you. I would not question this to much, because you might get what you don't want.

Does he live in a different place than you? Is that why you've only seen him three times? Do you talk on the phone a lot? Write e-mails? He would have to get to know you before he could love you. I'm thinking that maybe he is saying that he loves you to keep you around. He might think that he loves you, but in reality he loves the idea of you.

Why not? But that doesn't really end the story. Do you love him? Your love for him doesn't depend on whether he loves you does it? If you don't love him, then it doesn't matter if he loves you. If you do love him, then you have nothing to lose by believing him.
