Easy. Just place your silverware in a ziplock bag with a boiled and shelled egg for a day or two. Then remove and wash your cutlery - it should have re-tarnished nicely by then.

Depending upon the design on your silverware, some dark areas amplify it and make it more attractive. Evidently, that bothers your wife.

You might try cleaning the silverware by placing it into a flat plastic, or ceramic container on some aluminum foil with liquid detergent in it (also water) and the ionic action will cause some transfer to the aluminum. You might find some middle ground between you and your wife so that she will not hit you with a 10" cast iron skillet. That hurts, by the way.

Previous post is right. Patina is the product of a chemical reaction between the item (your case..silver) and outside agents (different elements, minerals, etc.) You can't replace it, just have to wait for it to develop again, may take awhile though.

Patina is nothing more than tarnish [oxidation, rust]. Silver will tarnish again , just leave it alone for a while exposed to the element.
