Its pretty late now but you might be lucky and get a room. If so most hotels there during Mardi Gras have a three night minimum at premium prices. The best time to go would be the week-end before Mardi Gras and leave on Ash Wednesday. this way you will see all the best parades. Endymion on Sat night, Bacchus on Sun night, Mon is Lundi Gras and Rex & Zulu on Fat Tuesday. I THINK Orpheus also parades on Monday night. But anyway if you like having a good time New Orleans is the place to be, especially in the French Quarter. And this area wasn't damaged during Katrina. Check out NOLA.com and see if you can find a hotel or room to rent. Have Fun....

Try orbitz, hotels.com, etc...the hotel rooms are 90% booked for Mardi Gras, so you can still get a room, but it will take some work. Try the Garden District Inn, Hampton Inn, Ponchartrain Hotel, all on St. Charles. You might also want to try a bed and breakfast (there's one on Prytania and Jackson called the Howard House Inn), they may have vacancies still. I would stay uptown rather than downtown. You can get down to the quarter to celebrate, and you'll have a nicer place to stay and more vacancies uptown. Or, try craigslist.com (the new orleans page) and see if anyone is subletting their apt. for a few days. Lots of people do this for MG and it's a great way to be able to stay in a house! Have fun!
