Successfully completing the EIB course. The participants must perform 33 tasks at 24 stations. Of course that varies by base. Some of these tasks are applying first aid; employing and recovering a claymore mine; arming and throwing a hand grenade; protecting against nuclear, biological and chemical attack; zeroing a laser-aiming device; assembling and disassembling an M-240 machine gun; and loading and firing a .50- caliber machine gun. All tasks must be performed as they would be performed in combat. To complete the testing successfully, each Soldier could fail no more than three events and no single event twice.
As a prerequisite for the testing, every participant is required to: 1.complete a 12-mile road march with a 35-lb. rucksack in less than three hours.
2.Use accurate land navigation to find two out of three points in two hours.
3.Qualify as an expert with an M-4 carbine.

The strict requirements narrow the field of contenders before the first day's challenges.

EIB testing is very selective. Getting the badge sets you apart from your peers, because not everyone is going to get it.
Even if an infantryman fails to earn his EIB, preparing for the testing gives him valuable training.
You are maybe not familiar with the CIB (combat infantry). You earn this one for participating in real world combat conditions.

The Expert Infantry Badge,E.I.B., applies ONLY to the US Army Infantry! My recommendation to study the manual and KNOW how the rehash the instructions as they are written on the manual. Infantrymen that cannot recite the steps as on the manual WILL FAIL! The exam is brutal and I barely earned it in Vicenza Italy with the All American battalion: 325th Airborne Infantry. Do NOT memorize! COMPREHEND AND YOU WILL EARN IT!!! FOLLOW ME, I AM THE INFANTRY!!!!!!

Seems like it varies from year to year too...one testing cycle, it's called the "Everybody In Battalion" badge...next year, 5 people get it. It's not really physically demanding...more retention of the information you've been given. Some just can't follow instructions.
