Ceramic tile or Vinyl tile? I have a conventional floor. I need the positive and negative opinions of each.

According to what room we're talking about. I prefer ceramic tile. For a kitchen though it might be wiser to get a high quality vinyl tile. Things get dropped in a kitchen, pot, pans, dishes, etc...especially if you have kids. Ceramic tile will chip and crack if things are dropped onto it. Vinyl tile is much more durable.

The most asked question in flooring. Ceramic tile or vinyl. You mention vinyl tiles however, so it depends if you mean LVT(Luxury vinyl tiles) or the cheaper version. Ceramic tile typically are hard and cold. If you do not have the proper sub floor it can be an added expense to install the correct sub floor. You can install heating underneath to get rid of the cold, again at an added expense. Cost of tile can go from $.69 to $7.00 or higher per sq.ft. depending on the durability and construction take the average to be safe. Then there is the grout, which again can be sealed. Structural movement etc.etc.etc. The pros are if all this is done correctly it is an awesome life long floor. There are several newer products, however, that are making it big. Such as Congoleum Dura Ceramic, Mannington Adura, Nafco Permastone, Karndean and Arteca LVT's. All are excellent products with varying degrees of quality and construction. Pros are warmer, softer and quieter than conventional ceramics, easier to repair if damaged, water does not affect the product itself, can be installed over a not so level sub floor and over existing vinyl to an extent, grout look on some without the hassles of sealing. Pricing can vary usually more than the ceramic but can be installed easier than ceramics with a little more room for error especially for the DYI. Check out the LVT's for realism, cost and durability it is a market that is growing rapidly with great success.

When you refer to vinyl tile, are you talking about vinyl sheet or individual tiles? My personal preference would be ceramic because it adds more value to your home and can be more durable. But it is also more difficult to install. Vinyl tile can tear and if you are putting down vinyl sheet, it is not easy to repair if you get a tear or an air pocket. Also individual vinyl tiles can come loose easier, though they are easier to repair/replace than vinyl sheet or even ceramic for that matter.

If you own the house... ceramic... you'll get the money back plus when you sell.
If you rent, peel and stick vinyl, cheap and disposable...
