The best dog food is one that doesn't have wheat, corn, soy, beet pulp, dyes, chemical preservatives or a lot of by products. The best dog food taht has a named meat source as at least the first two ingredients.
Some very good choices are:
Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Wellness, Solid Gold,Innova, Timberwolf, Premium Edge, percise, Blue Buffalo to name just as few.
Stay away from grocery store brands such as Purina Dog Chow,Pedigree, IAMS/Eukanuba, Science Diet, Alpo etc.
Wet foods are also fine to feed along with dry. Wet foods have a higher meat content and lower fat. They also have a lot less carbohydrates. Contrary to popular belief )even among some vets) wet food doesn't cause tooth issues. Food doesn't stay in a dogs mouth long enough to promote issues since dogs do not chew foods in the manner as humans do. They only break chunks into size that can be swallowed without choking.

The most important thing is to make sure the dog food ingredients does not have corn and by-products in it. Dogs have a hard time digesting corn and by-products is just a filler with no nutritional value. Unfortunately corn is cheap and it's the first ingredient in most dog foods you'll find in a grocery store or large pet store (example of a poor dog food is popular Pedigree). I recommend finding a small pet food store in your area and asking the manager for a recommendation based on the type of dog you have and its age. There are lots of good brands including Artemis, Canidae, Wellness, Chicken Soup and Innova. Just get a few samples from the store and see which one your dog likes best.

There are only two brands I feed my pet. Innova, which I can only get online and at some health food stores and Maximum Nutrition at Wal-Mart. Innova is very expensive at $50 a bag but Maximum Nutrition is very cheap and is one of the highest quality brands around. The important thing is to look at the ingredients and make sure the first one is a meat product. Some companies like Science Diet and Iams have a horrible marketing technique in which they start out with a good product, get a good reputation, the start using cheap products without notifying the consumers. Products such as cornmeal and brewers rice don't provide any nutritional value to the dog and only cause them to defecate more frequently.

I would go with Canidae dry dog food. It is one of the best dog foods on the market. Recommended by breeders and dog shows. I tried it with my labs and noticed a difference in their coats, the condition of their skin and nails. It does not contain corn meal (which some dog are allergic to), wheat, Soy, Grain Fractions, Fillers or by products and Naturally Preserved!. It is also made for all types of dogs.
The great things about Canidae dog food is when you buy 12 bags the next one is free.

Commercial dog foods are all about the same as regards nutrient value. The big question is does you dog prefer dry food or canned food.I have a 75 lb. English Setter who is eleven years old and in very good health. He eats a mixture of about 50/50 caned and dried food along with cooked vegetables and occasional piece chicken or fish.
Your dog probably has a preference so I would offer him dry food and canned food at alternate feeding and he will show you which he prefers the you can eliminate one type or mix them.

You want to stay away from foods with ingredients such as corn, wheat, fillers, beef and by products. All of those ingredients are hard for your dog or puppy to digest.
Some bad foods are Iams, Purina, Alpo, Science Diet, Pedigree and Bil Jack.
Some GOOD foods are Natures Recipe, Nutro Max, Lassie and Royal Chain.
I personally recommend Natures Recipe. It is an all natural food and extremely healthy for your dog or puppy. It leads to a shinny coat and a healthy body. It also cuts down on shedding, bad breath and the amount of stool your dog produces.
Natures Recipe had different bags for different size dogs and ages. If your dog is over 7 then you want him or her on Senior food. The pieces are made a little bit softer so it is easier for them to chew.
Stay away from wet food as it sticks to their teeth and builds up in their system. It is ok for a treat once in a while but not daily.
Before switching foods you want to check with your vet and make sure your dog or pup has no health problems.
After that you want to switch him or her slowly otherwise it will make him or her sick.
You can find those healthy foods at your local Pet Smart or Pet Co.
Also stay away from rawhide and human food as neither are healthy for your dog. Stay with his dog food and Natural or compressed bones.

Look for one with protein as the 1st ingredient. Avoid ones with corn or wheat as the 1st.
