I bought mine from Basspro.com - Bass Pro shop a Magellan Platinum. Its not one of the ones they show on TV but cost as much. You have to decide what is your reason for using one. In my case I use it for finding Properties and locations and use the Topo maps. If your in the city you would benefit from the City maps and such. There is just a 1 time purchase cost and then what ever you need beyond just like a PC. Cost can start some under $ 100 and go well beyond $ 1,000.00 depending on you it can be a great tool to navigate around with. Or just a fun toy in the car. You can even get a cell phone with this added another option for you to consider.

GPS is a great addition to any vehicle in my opinion. As for the risk of it being outdated this is not so true. GPS uses a variety of satellites in earths orbit to triangulate an individuals position at any given time. This is the most accurate and effective way of doing so thus far and there is no clear and present danger of this technology going to scrap. As for the software restaurants ,businesses and roads listed in your unit may change but updates for this software are usually available through the manufacturer of the unit or through the dealership

GPS navigation is fantastic. It's a one-time cost at time of purchase. Mine came from the factory so its integrated into my Ford Fusion.

Factory versions tend to be more expensive since its integrated into your vehicle. It's tied into your speedometer, vehicle electronics, as well as visually integrated into the dashboard. Garmin makes a good aftermarket unit. Magellans are probably the best, but those can get pricey too.

When I was in school they taught me how to read. The Marines taught me how to read a map and navigate by it. Every state has a free State road map. Guess I'll save a few bucks and plan my trip the paper way. Besides it's more fun as you can plan alternate routes.

No, I don't... If someone wants to steal my car, then they must have needed it worse than I did.
I have an Alarm & a Gun.. that's plenty for me.
