in order to live to be a more useful person, we have to harm others through competition, in order to live, we have to kill lots of lives in the world.
then we believe in god so that these activities are all rationalized since we can often omit the dark side.
what do you think?

I have doubt in some of the tenets of my practice as well, but then great doubt (in addition to great faith and great determination) is encouraged in Zen Buddhism. There's nothing wrong with doubt based on rational thought.

I think that we are to make sure that our motives are pure, because I can be good at something and not be competitive and competition is healthy as long as we do not seek to hurt others. And yes that is competition these days to have people hurt around you but the choice is always yours to do the right thing. Something that may help you understand it all is to remember that God is not the person behind all the hurt and suffering in the world...but remember that all this started when Satan deceived Eve and she made the CHOICE to sin, and then the repercussions are still spinning off to even today. So though these things are happening around us, our goal is to try and focus on the fact that amidst it all God still preserves and gives us a chance to serve Him in all spirit and truth, so that even if we die we have a chance of Eternal life with Him because we have lived our lives the best we can to be the servant for others in this life. It is as simple and as complex as that...I hope I was able to help...always remember NEVER to doubt God, because he is the One that makes it all make sense to live in this world and keep your sanity. Nothing is new under the sun and all this happened before, and people survived, and the name of God survived through it all, so courage and hope knowing that God does exist, and though the bad seems to overpower the good, remember that God will be the vindicator of His people, and when it is all said and done make sure that you are on His side because He is coming back with His army to defeat the devil indefinitely. PLEASE do not let the devil deceive you, it seems to overwhelming to think that God exists among all this mess, but just look at the sunrise and the sustenance evn the adversley affected has and you will see that God exists!!

What has your question to do with God.your first paragraph is based on results caused by mans base instincts ie. greed, lust, to take other peoples land etc.Believing in God does not rationalize these actions. believing in God makes you strive to remedy them. A usefull person does not get on by treading over other peoples lives. by killing. People might have this philosopy who have a fixed idea that this life is it. but anyone who has faith in the next life would be very foolish to follow this base ideal. The dark side is always with us and should never be rationalized

If the entire world believed in the point that our major goal is reaching the eternal God then there would be much less evil than you think. But what we do is we SUPERSTITIOUSLY keep following what ever science says. That is the major cause of all evil. Everyone wants to be better than other. And no matter how hard one works they have to face the challenge from new people. This leads to jealousy, constant insecurity and all the evil. You can never have peaceful life. If we started believing more of what some popular religions like Hinduism, Buddhism etc have to say there is less room for such evil. Hindus made one key observation and repeatedly mentioned that point in all their voluminous scriptures. We are not physical bodies but we are eternal souls. Everyone needs to work with that perspective in mind.
Moment one associates with one's little physical body, all problems begin and he begins turn into evil. One gets into constant competition with each other, becomes jealous, hates others if he is not approved etc etc etc. list goes on.

If you start become humble(which is nothing but being EGO LESS) and have motives that are not for your silly ego satisfaction, success comes automatically. Your mind and body go into a divine mode. And every day things and surrounding begin to look more friendly. That is the secret.
I have practiced so many times and seen as a passive observer to see how things work. Every time I try to compete with others even with a bit of greed in mind I fail. I miserably fail. If I work with good motives things turn to be so good for me that many times I have good surprises. Many of them knowingly or unknowingly practice this but don't realize that this is what they are doing and what that in turn means. Being selfless means, we are accepting that everything that is there is not JUST you and that SOUL lives in everyone.
I don't think there is some external god. We are just souls with infinite capability. But we are attached to a body that has some limitations. Soul doesn't have limitations and it is in all of us. And we are nothing but souls.

Its not necessary to harm others to be useful ourselves. Get a lifestyle that isnt in competition with others. You dont have to be 'best' to be useful.
Neither do we have to kill other people to live. Our governments may, but we dont have to.
