Sounds like the transmission. Check for a leak. My husband has a 1997 Dodge Ram that had this same problem and he had to rebuild the transmission. A lot of the older model Dodges have this problem, not just the trucks. Don't get no "shade tree mechanic" to fix it, or you will end up in the same situation you are now. You are better off taking it to a well known transmission shop or to your local Dodge dealer.
Also, it could be the catalytic converter that is stopped up. This could sometimes keep the truck from accelerating and shifting. Get under the truck, tap the catalytic converter with a hammer and then drive the truck and see if there is a change. If there is, then your catalytic converter is stopped up. Also, check the back of the muffler to see how the flow of exhaust coming out. Is it a lot or a little? If there is barely any exhaust coming out, it is definately the catalytic converter.
As for the spark plugs, that has nothing to do with shifting and acceleration. If it had a bad plug, it would be skipping but you still can accelerate. The ingnition and the belt would not have anything to do with you loosing power or shifting. If the ignition was bad, it would not crank. If the belt was bad, it would be squeeling and soon pop.

Since it isn't shifting at all, I would guess that it is an input or output sensor on the transmission, but it could be any number of other things.

Also, if the fluid has been changed recently, then the place that changed it might have used Dexron instead of ATF+4 and this can cause problems in a Chrysler transmission.

Best thing to do is take it to the local Dodge dealer and have them look at it. They'll have the know-how and experience working on them to know whether it's a sensor, control module, or something internal in the trans causing your problem.

Many trans shops try to sell a reman unit instead of fixing the current transmission, so I'd have the dealer diagnose it. If the dealer tells yuo it needs a transmission, then you can call around for price quotes on replacing the trans to the trans shops and other local mechanics. If they're a lot cheaper than the dealer, tell the dealer and ask if they can match the price or at least get close to it. If you have it diagnosed but not repaired, they will usually charge a diagnostic fee around $75 or so.

Unfortunately, Dodge brand trucks and SUVs do have a history of transmission problems. Unless you have excellent mechanical skills and access to the appropriate tools and equipment I would highly recommend taking your truck to an ASE certified mechanic.

Its probably the transmission, they suck in dodge's. Take it to a good repair shop, and expect a costly repair bill.
