Does the Papillion breed have a restriction (AKC) whether the ears are up or down? What if a dog has one of each?

This is direclty from the AKC breed specifications. "Ears - The ears of either the erect or drop type should be large with rounded tips, and set on the sides and toward the back of the head. (1) Ears of the erect type are carried obliquely and move like the spread wings of a butterfly. When alert, each ear forms an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the head. The leather should be of sufficient strength to maintain the erect position. (2) Ears of the drop type, known as the Phalene, are similar to the erect type, but are carried drooping and must be completely down. Faults - Ears small, pointed, set too high; one ear up, or ears partly down. "

Is it your dog? I have had Papillions and one of them was the "perfect" Papillion. But when he was a puppy, he went through his awkward stage and his ears would flop up and down. One would be up and the other would be down. It was really cute. As he matured, this stopped happening and his ears stayed up permanently. Great dogs!!

The Papillons ears should be up, according to AKC standards, but that is ONLY for SHOW DOGS. You can have an AKC registered pure bred Papillon with floppy ears. It just won't be able to be shown in the ring.

Ours is a pure bread dog, and his ears are sometimes up, and sometimes down. Depends on his mood. Not really sure what the AKC has to say about it. Perhaps you could research it through their website further.

Typically they are up. But if it's a puppy, they will flop around for a while before they stand straight up. You can put tape on the back of their ear to help train them to stay in place.
