Really, unless you're coming down to help, then don't come for a while. There is very little that has built back in way of stores and whatnot. Most of us in Pass Christian have to drive to Gulfport or around Bay St. Louis if we need just about anything, and it's not really that convienient.

Contact Red Crosses and Salvation Armies if you are planning to come down to help, though. Try to get a shelter in a larger town.

There are several organizations in the Katrina areas that house volunteers. You might consider working as a volunteer for the free room and board until you find a job and a place to live. You have many choices of organizations, from church sponsored to independents. Most receive United Way assistance so that would be a good starting point for you. Your best bet would be the metro-New Orleans Area and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

I would start by contacting the local red cross in those areas. They did alot of work after the Hurricane, and I'm sure they still have assistance programs set up. I'd also contact the cities/counties in which your interested...alot of the federal/state funds were dispersed locally. Don't know what the residency/ time requirements are, but that would be a start. They should be able to point you in the right direction and give you the information on who to contact for more information, etc.

I'm in Mobile and there are plenty of places you can live. It's difficult to find people who are willing to work now so you shouldn't have problems finding a job. So many people have left this area, there are more jobs than people to fill them. Mobile is central on the coast, so you're only a short drive away from Florida, MS or LA.

Try craigslist New Orleans. Some people are subletting their apartments, you may be able to get a furnished one...I'd wait until after Mardi Gras for the prices to go down on apartments (a lot of people rent them out for a week or two during MG). Good luck!
