Everything is fine in moderation ... a little bit of what you like is good for you ... otherwise life would be pretty miserable if everything potentially damaging was banned ... I am however always amazed at people's lack of self restraint .. as I witness every weekend with girls fighting girls, boys fighting boys and boys fighting girls out in the street outside the nightclub near my home out of sheer drunkeness. I do agree that alcohol poisoning at college continues to be a problem .. I have advocated for years that 'life skills' like handling alcohol (and people and money) wisely should be taught at high school and college. People are going out into the world not equipped to make smart choices, and often parents are not taking the role of mentor that they should.

Alcohol in moderation - a couple of drinks in an evening, for instance - is fine, because it doesn't have the Jekyll/Hyde effect you describe. It is when it is abused/overdone that problems arise - alcohol poisoning, lack of judgement, slower reflexes, and so on.

Social drinking is what is considered normal; getting drunk out of one's mind is not.

Anyone who encourages another to over-indulge in alcohol, whether it be at a party, an initiation, or elsewhere, is totally irresponsible. More and more students, however, are seeing the negative side of too much alcohol, and are refraining from that behavior. SADD (Students Against Driving Drunk) is one such organization.

BTW, wine is mentioned in the Bible as a good thing - in moderation. Even Christ turned water into wine at the wedding in Cana, if you recall.

Get a grip, here. I'm not sure that students "drop dead at the drop of a hat." In fact, except where liver damage occurs over many years of alcohol abuse, alcohol-related deaths are extremely rare unless motor vehicles or weapons get involved. However, alcohol abuse is certainly an issue demanding our attention.

Prohibition, fortunately or unfortunately, was a dismal failure. While keeping illegal drugs out of the hands of those who seek them is pretty much impossible, public sentiment is sufficient to keep laws on the books. With alcohol, the general public just wasn't on the law's side. We're seeing somewhat the same thing with marijuana. It may never be "legal," but most laws have eroded to an ineffective level unless trafficking is involved.

Just about anything you can name can be harmful when the wrong person gets hold of it and uses it wrongly, or for the wrong purpose. It is not the thing that is harmful, but the harm that PEOPLE do using it.
It is possible to kill yourself with water intoxication. Case in point, the recent news report about a woman who took on a challenge put out by some kind of radio show, to win a prize for being the one who can drink the most water without going to the bathroom. Alcohol used correctly is not only harmless, but we now know is beneficial and extremely heart healthy. As for how many people die each year as a result of the MISuse of alcohol, the statistics are absolutely overwhelming that by far the greatest cause of death, and general harm both to individuals and society as a whole, is FOOD. Here in the States, over-consumption of food (and I use the term "food" loosely because most of what is overconsumed is pure junk and extremely unhealthy) is now epidemic and each year trillions of dollars are wasted treating people from the dangerous, and often deadly results of their out of control eating habits. Death claims the lives of hundreds and thousands of people from heart attacks, strokes and diabetes, directly related to what they eat; one evaluation put it as more than all the drug and alcohol related deaths combined. And that does not even take into account those who do not die, but are rendered incapable of gainful employment, so that they cannot make any contribution at all to Society, but instead become a lifelong burdon as they consume the attention and man-hours of their care-givers. These people too, sop up billions of dollars, and divert the time and skills of doctors and other medical personel, that might have been spent attending to people with ailments that were not the result of their own self-destructive behaviours; and the money that might have been directed to making better and faster headway in research devoted to the clearer understanding, and eventual cure of many horrendous genetic conditions that bring suffering and helplessness to so many through no fault of their own.

Alcohol moderately - a pair of beverages in a night, working example - is high quality, because of the fact it would not have the Jekyll/Hyde effect you describe. that's while that's abused/overdone that problems upward push up - alcohol poisoning, loss of judgement, slower reflexes, etc. Social eating is what's seen typical; getting below the effect of alcohol out of one's strategies isn't. all of us who encourages yet another to over-bask in alcohol, whether or no longer it incredibly is at a celebration, an initiation, or someplace else, is surely irresponsible. further and extra scholars, even however, are seeing the damaging fringe of too lots alcohol, and are refraining from that habit. SADD (scholars against making use of below the effect of alcohol) is one such business enterprise. BTW, wine is stated in the Bible as a good factor - moderately. Even Christ became water into wine on the marriage in Cana, in case you remember.

Like so many other things that don't make sense in this society, it's all about 'Money' As long as there is more money to be made then lost, Alcohol will always be sold. Smoking kills, but it also makes company people very rich. People are like cattle, seem to be easily let. I hope you find interest in the following which I wrote. I have now been sober for over 20 years,

As my feet slap down against the cold wet pavement, and my face drips rain from the storm, an unrelenting need to drink pushes me further. Exact final destination appears unknown , but it's inevitable that the evil inside will again return me to the source of my nightmare. No control, no will of my own, no power had I found that might evict this hell that had infected my body and mind. Self-identity, and all that was once me, had been buried under countless layers of drunkenness, so deep, that any calls for help were merely an echo inside my head.
This living liquid curse, cunning and without conscience, had been absorbed into a body which at one time eagerly welcomed it's unyielding influence. But now, as the onslaught of alcohol turned viciously against the world around me, it was only I being held responsible for it's drunken destruction carried out during my imprisonment.
Those intense fear ridden mornings, when I awoke to find yet another nightmare of alcohol's creation, devilishly constructed from it's own personality the night before. Whether it was the sight of dried blood crusted over both hands, or the unfamiliar surroundings of a place where I shouldn't have been, alcohol knew how to render me frozen with crippling insecurity. Too frightened to reason out a healthy answer as to what was happening to me, a deliberate terror of conscience always reached out and tightly gripped my soul. This devil, disguised and hidden behind my own recently drunken face, knew exactly where I'd run to for help. This was much more then an accident through drink. Alcohol's intent was to survive at all costs, to live and breath it's own existence using me as it's host of choice.
But, now, unaware of this developing transformation, all I wanted to do was calm the terror inside my head. There would be only one place, one exit, one chance to escape into a feeling of normality. Alcohol left nothing to chance, and as it waited patiently for me to return a bottle to my lips, I could almost hear a deep sullen laughter quicken my mobility. I desperately needed to lock myself away into the only security I knew, and to experience that precious freedom, I once again had to ingest my enslaver.

Alcohol in and of itself doesn't kill anyone. Overconsumption does.

One thing I absolutely can't stand is the trend to blame inanimate objects for people's irresponsible, negligent or criminal behaviors. Never mind blaming the person who commits the act, it HAS to be the fault of the gun, the liquor, the cigarette, the Big Mac or the car. Give me a break.

You are one curios guy. are you trying to figure out something? hehe. anyway, everything that is in excess is bad but a little or moderation is healthy and even advisable. Alcohol works like that, it helps digestion, it calms the nerves, it gives us a warm boost when we are cold and it allows us a rush of strength when we are shy, it even makes love more warmth and tender. BUT, it turns people into bruts and pigs in excess. the bottom line then is that you take it only when it is needed and whenever not needed take it in moderation. ciao
