A ritual site was recently found dating back 70,000 years, so it is possible that some form of ritual was performed during the time of australopithecus. Perhaps not Santa (you definitely have a thing for Santa these days, JD!) and xmas lights but definitely ritual.

Santa Clause is a Christian adoption of the God Saturn, who ruled during the Golden Age of Mankind. Since Australopithecus was more than likely an animist, I doubt he had Santa Claus. But he more than likely did worship fire and the sun, which are the ancient origin of using Christmas lights.

I don't know about decking the halls but revering big old trees was sure to be around a long time ago.
Interesting question, I'm stumped for now as to when this started.

I believe that religion is the progressive revelation of God to humankind. Since God has no beginning, religion has no beginning either. I'm sure that in ancient times, pre-modern human species such as homo erectus had divine prophets and messengers from God who revealed to them certain teachings which they were capable of understanding.

Primitive peoples may have started celebrating the solstices but we have no way of knowing how far back they did this - they may have just worshipped what they saw, the sun, moon, animals...
