As with all these questions, I give a *genuinely* scientific answer, i.e., one which examines the data objectively and doesn't dismiss them a priori.
There are many recorded cases of communications with the spirits of the dead, and many of them have been studied by scientific parapsychologists. The data are too extensive to review here. See:
Braude, Stephen. "Immortal Remains."
Griffin, David Ray. "Parapsychology, Philosophy, and Spirituality: A Postmodern Exploration."
Bottom line from the empirical evidence: these phenomena either occur spontaneously, or occur in the presence of mediums with apparent paranormal powers. There is no evidence that these phenomena can be created at will. Such few genuine mediums as there are (most are charlatans) seem to have a native paranormal ability which cannot be cultivated in people who lack such ability.

There are many people who have lost loved ones and who would desperately like to be able to talk with them again or receive messages from them. This desire is understandable, but contacting the dead is not permitted by God according to the Bible. The attempt is a sin against God and results in either deception or involvement with demonic entities impersonating the dead.
I urge you, as strongly as I know how, not to dabble or get involved in anything to do with occult practices, including this one. At best, they are deceptive and fraudulent; at worst, they can involve you in matters which are satanic in origin.
The Bible is very clear that such things are false and will only lead you away from God and His truth. In the Old Testament God commanded, 'Let no one be found among you ... who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord' (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).
The Bible urges us to turn in faith to Christ and to seek the truth He has given us in the Bible. God's Word alone gives us spiritual truth; any other path will lead us astray. Occult practices will never tell us with finality what is beyond the grave, but because of His resurrection we can know from Christ everything we need to know."
It is critically important for anyone who has been involved in this or any other occult practice to confess it to God as a sin, renounce the practice, and turn to Jesus Christ for His forgiveness, cleansing and protection. Consultation with a Gospel-preaching pastor may be wise. A book such as "The Bondage Breaker" by Neil Anderson has been helpful to many. It would be available through a Christian bookstore.

People can definitely communicate with the "dead" it says so in the Bible; but it is a sin and you are basically allowing Satan into your life to destroy it if you mess around in this type of communicating.... You can communicate with God in the same manner through the Holy Spirit this i would definitely recommend because this will build you up and great things will begin to happen to you.....

It's hard to give a serious answer to this. Most of the people who advertise they can doit will charge you a great deal of money. This practice has been around for a long, long time and proven to be a scam time and time again.

No! The dead know nothing. They rest in their graves (like sleep) until the resurrection. If you communicate with a being pretending to be a "spirit of the dead" it will be an evil (fallen) angel. (one of the adversary's group -- Satan's angels)

Yes, I know about a man who could communicate with the spirits and bring news and peace to families who just lost a relative.

From a Christian standpoint, people "communicate" with fallen angels or deamons pretending to be people. The spiritual rhelm is vast and I'd be careful delving into it without protection.

I am sure if they provoke the spirits they will talk to them. It says in the bible there are no such things as ghosts or spirits, but just demons. I would not recommend doing this, once you provoke the devil...you let him in and he has full rein to do whatever he wants to you and make you see whatever he wants you to see.

there is a long standing prize of one million dollars from the James Randi foundation for anyone proving any type of psychic phenomena. no one has won it, no one ever will. my mother was taken for a ride by one of these charlatans. when i decided to visit them i gave a fake name and address. in the waiting room i was engaged in conversation by another 'client', who made me immediately suspicious because their chat was peppered with questions. so i made stuff up. the client went in before me. when i went in after her. guess what the medium regurgitated the lies i had told the client. beware of these nasty parasites who feed on your grief.

spirits are just another attempt at dealing with the human brains inability to face death in a way that is comfortable psychologically.
