Because some Christians believe that people are basically evil, and that without the threat of an eternity in Hell to keep them in line, people will revert to the most depraved behaviour imaginable.
Some people cannot grasp the idea that athiests do not need either the celestial stick (Hell) or the cosmic carrot (Heaven) of the afterlife to lead moral and decent lives in this world.

Well see that is the problem. Nonbelievers take all believers and put them in one box and doesn't see any differences. That is not how I see things(I do NOT like bible thumpers and accusers any more than you do).
Jesus told the apostles to tell all nations about Him. That is part of what we are...morality is not something that comes out of thin air. Many people are moral. believing in a sound value system, but those sound values and morals were based in Christianity.
They cetainly didn't come from Greeks
So you can be a good, moral person and not believe in God but then I have to ask you ... why?

Men that don't believe in God can have morals. The dis-belief in God however can put a person at a dis-advantage in the sense that he limits his knowledge to only what men think they know?
To open a mind to all knowledge, he would be more rounded to wisdom by a study of God's word or way of thinking, and I am speaking of scripture not traditions of men.
God has given man reasoning powers. By observing and reasoning on things as God has made them and the results from using these in various ways, man can learn much as to what is proper. It is really God that teaches, and the man with his mind properly oriented by God’s Word can view things in their right perspective and relationship, thereby rightly discerning what is natural or unnatural. By this means the individual can have a trained conscience in this respect and can avoid a conscience that is defiled and that approves unnatural things.—Ro 1:26, 27; Tit 1:15; 1Co 8:7.

In general, our life choices will be guided by our basic beliefs. If you do not believe in a higher power, what is your guidance system? Why would you choose to have morals, or be a good person? And if the chips are down, would you continue to be? Some of us believe that only YHVH is truly good, and so one can be truly good only be partaking of His essence, which we do by Receiving the Messiah Yahoshua. Doesn't that make sense?

i do no longer think of all of us extremely is usual with of ways that Heaven-Purgatory-Hell mojo is going down up there. So no person at here *is usual with of* how this works. however the God i think in would not try this. easily, i'm a Christian, and that i remember my mom telling me that Jesus & God are for all and sundry and not purely Christians or despite. some religions/human beings have confidence that God & heaven/paradise/despite is *merely* for the human beings of their faith, yet i do no longer think of that makes particularly experience in any respect. faith is incredibly annoying to maintain or maybe start up, so i'm specific God could understand. yet you recognize, have confidence what you like and enable others do the comparable. EDIT: Saucy Ski Siren & James S's solutions made me chortle :) James S: ''good human beings do no longer bypass to heaven, Christians do.'' Hahaha :D you're able to write that down. there is often expenditures like those in those extremely witty, humorous quotebooks.

The term "Good Person" is very subjective.
One can be good than another bad person. But can not be perfect as there is none perfect on the face of the earth.
Only when you know the one and only Good God, you can strive to follow Him.

Because christians are generally less educated and don't understand the philosophy of morality. They are also told that their document is the source of all morality and that without god to mete out justice everyone would behave like animals.
History shows that the reverse is true. The most secular societies have the lowest rates of crime, teen pregnancy, STD's, drug-abuse and divorce.

Because they mistakenly believe they get their morals from the bible. If this was true Christians would be even more violent, intolerant and dangerous than they already are. I have evangelists and born-again christians in mind but the others aren't necessarily dramatically different.
Origins of morality on here has been debated as nauseam, somebody who thinks that its ok to murder rape and steal in the absense of a punishing god show how immoral they truly are. What sorry excuses for human beings they are.
If we got our morality from the bible then rape, child abuse and even genocide would be moral actions under certain circumstances. The abrahamic god is one of the most disgustingly anti-human god thats ever been worshipped and its time we put him in his grave and moved on.

Hello agnosticm... :)
The Ten Commandments are summed up with these two commandments:
Thou shall Love the Lord thy God with all of thy heart..and thou shall Love thy neighbor as thyself.. :)
Upright, honest, straightforward, open, virtuous, honorable.
Integrity, standards, morality. Morals, ethics refer to rules and standards of conduct and practice. Morals refers to generally accepted customs of conduct and right living in a society, and to the individual's practice in relation to these: the morals of our civilization.
Ask yourself this question, do you have these the qualities in your life, then if you do, then you do have morals.. :)
In Jesus Most Precious Name..
With Love..In Christ.. :)

People who think that are idiots. Some of the most moral honest decent people I know both here and personally are atheist while some of the most amoral dishonest people I know or know of are *good* religious folks.
