Go to the court house and tell them your situation, they can give you the packet to file for a name change. You will probably have to show the death certificate of your spouse. It is not very expensive to make this change and it is not very hard to do either. Fill out the form they give you and attach the death certificate if they require you to do so, probably your birth certificate will be needed too and they you will have to pay the fees and file the paper to be signed by the judge.
Good Luck.

The easiest way is to get an attorney to file the paperwork for you. Depends on the state that you live in how long it will take.
The fact that you are a widow doesn't have anything to do with the name change, but it could cause problems for you if there are any pensions or Social Security benefits being collected.
So strongly suggest that you get an attorney. Shouldn't cost all that much. Varies state to state.

All you need to do is fill out a petition for name change and file it with a county district court clerk. The hardest part is coming up with the outrageous fees like $300 where I live. Go online to your local county clerks website and they should have all of that info posted.

As long as there is no attempt to defraud or run out on a debt you can use any name you wish. Get a bank account, change your credit cards, change your drivers license, and social security name, keeping the same number, using your birth certificate, which of course will have your maiden name.

Wierd - I had an ex-wife who of course spit on the ground I walked and hated me to hell and back so you could imagine my confusion why at court she requested to keep my name - up until she got married again.
Just start hyphenating it. There's no cost to go Julia Louis-Dreyfus or whoever. I have a sister who is still married and lives with her husband and her name is already hyphenated.
Other than that I would suspect your fairly young and have no connection to his family.
To each his own.
