I blame the prevalence of text-messaging. THAT needs quick abbreviations, and people who use it a lot become lazy. It drives me crazy---it's hard to read it without wanting to SMACK them!

The reason why "some people" are so lazy on the internet when it comes to using correct language is because they were never taught how to use the correct language and its because some people don't know how to use the correct language. And we are not in school so they figure what's the point.

Doesn't mean that they're lazy, just possibly in a rush.
Most people don't like to think Yahoo answers is like school, where you're being grading on an essay.

Plus some get typos because they're trying to type too fast.

last time I checked yahoo answers is for entertainment. Its not for school and its not work. Do people go around talking about people who do not wear a shirt and tie when they are not at work, its the same thing when its time to be professional people will be professional but if its casual they could care less. I think as long as you know what their saying its not a problem

Why exactly do you care???

It's their answer and their choice - we're not in school now, so no points will be taken away!

Oh, and did you know that "correct" grammar is a POLITICAL concept, not a LINGUISTIC one?

English has many dialects, but one particular dialect (the one spoken by the wealthy) has been decreed to be "correct".

But why is it "correct"?

Because some professor says it is?

Here is the key to living languages - if it functions as a means of communication between people who speak that language, it is "correct".

Like text message jargon - the kids use it because it's easier to type U than "you" or l8tr than "later" if your typing with your right thumb!

They know what it means, so, for their purposes, it is 'correct'.

Also, with English, there are different dialects. For instance, British English is dramatically different than American English.

And there are dialects of English, like Papua New Guinean Pidgin English and Jamaican Patois, which are so different than American English that they are mutually unintelligable!

Again, "correct" language is a POLITICAL concept, not a LINGUISTIC one!!!!

Also, the best way to shut down a conversation is to nitpick and correct people.

For some strange reason, that's what you want to do here.

Instead of trying to communicate, and encouraging your fellow Yahoo Answers participants to speak their piece, you're trying to shut them up by bullying them about their so called "bad grammar".

More importantly, why do you care how others communicate?

I'm a substitute teacher, so the New York City Board of Education pays me to care about my students' grammar, at least on the days when I'm called in to work.

But that's only between 8AM and 2:20 PM on days when I teach- before 7:59 AM and after 2:21 PM (and all day on my non working days) I really don't care!!!

So why is this important to you?

God, I don't understand you "grammar queens"!!!!!

Get a life!!!!

They're in too much of a hurry to spell everything out.
It's called chatspeak, by the way.
