It is either on the firewall under the hood or either the left or right side near the fuel tank. (follow the fuel lines back). The fuel filter is NOT in the fuel tank. The fuel pump is in the fuel tank, but not the fuel filter.

Is this a trick question. The Jeep Cherokee XJ was produced from 1984 thru 2001. There was no '02 Cherokee :(. Jeeps with four or inline six cylinder engines from '96 and earlier have the filter on the inside of the left frame rail near the fuel tank, '97 and later models have it in the fuel tank as part of the fuel pump/sending unit. Vehicles equipped with a V6 have it located in the fuel inlet nut attached to the carburetor.

Yea, the last year they made the Cherokee was 2001, so the fuel filter is not in existence. This is kind of like the request: I need a radiator for a '74 bug, huh?

if your still having problems goto your local auto parts store and see if they have a tool to remove the filters - the cheap ones are made out of plastic, and work just fine. to use it push the line into the filter, then the removal tool until it stops, then remove the line, & repeat on the other side of the filter. try not to be laying right under the filter when removing, the gas will burn on your skin and it smells bad too.

well actually all these people are wrong cause i have a 99 and i changed out the fuel filter myself it took 5 Min's to change and it is located behind the rear axle , right next to the fuel tank and it is really simple to change . there are three lines you just disconnect them and undo three screws and your ready to put the new one back in that simple.
