I am an athletic guy, and I am 100 kilos, and 176cm tall, according to BMI, that makes me heavily obese. Should I take steps to reduce my weight?

No because muscle can weigh more than fat so its not very accurate.

BMI is a guide. But it pretty close. So you are 5'9" or 5'10" tall and weigh 220 pounds I say yeah. Your BMI is about 31 or 32 that is obese. Normally you should weigh from about 170 to 175 pounds do the math. Good Luck!

There are also racial considerations- for instance, people of East Asian origin tend to have lower BMI than caucasians, even though an individual may be fatter than a caucasian with the same BMI.
Consider most professional athletes in contact sports. Work out their BMI.
You're hefty, but your body fat calculation should tell you if you're obese or not.

A lot of people think the BMI is skewed toward really skinny people with very little muscle mass. Basically you have to be a skinny marathon runner to get a good score.
The reason it's so widely used is (1) it's really simple to calculate height vs weight, and (2) it was cooked up by insurance companies, who get to charge more to people with high BMI's.
I don't know if you're fat or not just from your height and weight. I'd have to do a fitness test and a body fat measurement to really know. But that takes more time and money than the insurance companies want to spend...

BMI doesn't give accurate results for althletic people. Ignore it completely as it has no idication of your health what so ever. You have more muscle than the average joe and this weighs more than fat. So yes, by BMI readings you are obese... BUT THAT ISN'T CORRECT FOR YOU.

you can bring down to 90kilos. ensure that your waist is reduced.i think you are a bit obese.. Also since you are an athletic person, you are giving more strain to your heart to pump more blood. So its better that you reduce your wt. Moreover, when you are running or engaged in any sporty activities, there will be more strain to the back as well as to your legs..
so if you can, stick to your basics

My friend is a weight lifter according to the BMI he is obese but he's not hes trim and fit just very muscular.

Well, obviously not if your body fat percentage is healthy.
Male Body Fat Percentages:
2%-5%: Essential Body Fat
6%-10%: Athletes/Body Builders
11%-19%: Average Healthy Male
20%-23%: Borderline
24% Plus: Overfat
Have your body fat percentage tested and then worry if it is too high.

BMI is extremly inaccurate but then its not reall meant to be its doesn't take into account age or even gender im just under being overwieght accourding to BMI and yet you can still see my ribs

it may be muscle mass which, is more difficult to lose as a fat burner. i suggest to keep working out or doing your daily routine of exercises and eat healthy and even though it may take awhile, your bmi should change to a regular area.

It is accurate if you have measured yourself accurately, people who have a more muscular physique will show as being overweight due to the fact that muscle is heavier than fat.
If you are as fit as u describe and have no trouble seeing your tackle when u stand then i think your fine.
