Since you are posting this I take it you are close to your step dad? There are some lovely cards that say "You are just like a dad to me". Especially, if you don't call him Dad he would probably be really touched. If you call him dad then dad it is on the card. Difficult to answer not knowing how flush you are or his outlook on life. Even if he only enjoys the odd drink you can get whisky with his name on it on the occassion of his 60th birthday. Newspapers, DVD's etc of the day he was born. If you haven't the cash as especially old newspapers can be pricey he may be thrilled if you did events the day/year he was born yourself. I recently did this for my daughter, although only 30. I had a huge card and wrote all sorts of interesting facts as in headlines the day she was born, top films, songs of the year. Price of food items, people of interest who shared the same birthday, world population statistics that year etc etc etc. The list is endless. All free through the web. If you want to do research you can get a big red book and do a This is Your Life, trace family members or people you know he would like to see and secretly do this in the house or at a party if he is having one. If that's a bit much you could do a sort of wall freeze, collecting photos of him from childhood throughout and write comments underneath them. If he is young at heart and adventurous you could get him a micro flight or similar pursuits, they are advertised everywhere. Hope some of these ideas have pushed the right button

In high schooI, I would ask my dad and he would always frustrate me by saying that he didn't want anything but for me to be a good girl and get good grades and sort of mumble, mumble. So we had a special dinner with the good china and home-made cards.

In later years, I instituted the idea of a theme birthday party and that precluded gifts because the gift was everybody showing up having gone to the trouble of assembling some pretense of a costume. Not an elaborate one, just one or two items. I did decorations and found appropriate hokey music. Well, now that I think of it, it was like throwing a six year old's cowboy party for a sixty-year-old. Oh well, he seemed to enjoy the nonsense and we had fun being absurd.

I've got a 60th coming up in a few days. I don't know what your budget is but here's a few things I'd like to get:

Big Screen TV
Larger computer monitor
Good after shave lotion/cologne
A new set of luggage
A subscription to a magazine
Fruit of the month club (or anything sent monthly)
iPod
Fancy cell phone to replace the one I have now
A box of steaks (like Omaha steaks) or seafood
A surprise party
A visit in person to deliver a birthday card
Anything sent via UPS

If he is interested in gardening why not get a small tree to plant as a reminder of his 60th. If he likes reading then a book token. Try and veer away from clothes, they don't last and a 60th is worthy of something to keep. If he drives then perhaps something for his car. Think of what he likes and then expand on that idea.

I thought about being together even before I saw your screen name . I'm 71 and I would think the best would be to go somewhere together sharing something to do that you both enjoy, but also that lets each one see the more personal part of your personalities. If he had a part in raising you he would like to see thoughts and attitudes that are good and noble that he brought into your and your mothers life (and any siblings of yours ) What you might buy won't last as long as your relationship,so it can be most anything.

depends on his interests of course and your budget, though you may think about purchasing him a year's subscription to a magazine that he might like. You can generally get a year's subscription to any magazine for about £25 or so - he might like Saga magazine (www.saga.co.uk) - it's full of features on travel, motoring, finance, general interest, lots of stuff and a good read. Or Choice magazine. Or a motoring magazine.
If you subscribe for him, he will get a card advising him that you have purchased this and, every month, he will get the magazine through the post which will remind him what a great birthday gift you chose for him.
Hope this helps.

Does he like to read? If so, and he has never read them, the novels of Patrick O'Brian are a terrific read. The film 'Master and Commander' was based on them, but they are so much better than that. There is a series of 20 or so which need to be read in chronological order, so start with the first one, and if he likes it, you can get him more for the next umpteen Xmases and birthdays!

Ask your mom, she is the best person to ask as she knows him the best ,and a nice card from you with happy 60th Birthday (Dad) to show him that you class him as your Dad as well as your biological Dad.

Buy him a gift certificate to his favorite restaurant, and then he and your mom can have a nice dinner together. It is good to know that you care for your step dad and want to do something for him.If you need the extra money i'm sure that mom will chip in to help.

How about anything engraved, like a lighter with "to a great guy' or maybe he has a saying , you could put on it, or a engraved watch' trust me engraved means so much turns a lil lighter into something meaningful and special, good luck!
