It is not only about believing. Even Satan believes in Jesus. We only get saved by the mercy and grace of God when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. And when we do, we will do good deeds and we are also expected to show it to others with our works.
Paul tells how to become a Christian. James goes into detail what is expected from us once we already follow Christ. : )
Good deeds are important and required too but we do not get saved because of them. Remember Jesus saved a man hanging on the cross next to him. I am sure that if he had a change, he would have done good and not to waist his time here. Salvation is a wonderful gift, without it would not know when I have done enough, and I do not have to wonder if I measure up. : )

People misinterpreted what this means. What it really means is that the concept of the self/ego is the problem. If I do good deeds to get a reward, this is all about the self/ego. In the same way, if I believe in Jesus to get a reward (heaven), this is all about the self/ego. What Jesus really meant -- before the distortion that is the whole bible -- is that his experience was that there is no self and that he (and everyone else) is not the separate, isolated, physical self that we all think we are. The only way out of suffering, then, is to get to the same experience he had -- and he becomes a symbol for the way out because he had the experience/realization. Unfortunately, it's been turned into a self-centered, ego-preserving thing.

Believing in Jesus is more important because you are redeemed from your sins and you escape God's judgement for all your sins and have eternal life. Then you are also given grace and the gift of His righteousness to reign in life. You also have God's power to conquer sins and do good deeds with God empowering you and you can earn rewards in heaven. When you just do good deeds without knowing Jesus you will miss out on all these blessings, live a short mortal life and end up in the wrong place eternally.

Salvation is a gift which we receive from YHVH when we believe on His Son YAHOSHUA! That is the most important thing. Without that there is nothing. After we accept His lordship of our lives, we can then do good deeds. (Or rather He can do good deeds through us, for He is the head) We can not earn salvation by good deeds, for no one but YHVH can bring a clean thing out of an unclean thing. If one accepts the Lordship of the Messiah, then He will do the works of the Messiah. If one does the deeds of the adversary, then He has not received the Gift of the Messiah in himself.

Good deeds do not save you - they don't erase the bad deeds (sins). God is holy and we cannot be with Him if we are sinful. God loves us so much He could not leave it that way. The penalty for sin is death (spiritual) - separation from God. Jesus lived a perfect life, fully human, fully God, took our sins upon Himself on the cross. He died paying the penalty for our sins Himself. He rose from the grave in victory over death. Acceptance of His free gift of salvation allows us to have a relationship with God Almighty.
Where do good deeds come in? When you become a Christian, you become a changed person. Even though you are still human and will fail from time to time, the desire to live a life pleasing to God starts to grow within. Good deeds are simply the result of growing closer to God - we want to, not for gain, but because we love Him.

Believing in Jesus means doing good deeds. What Christians lack is good will. What Christians abound is hypocrisy.

Christ was sacrificed so that we could be free from sin...believing in Christ is supposed to take us away from a life of sin and allow us to lean on His power when we are tempted. If someone truly believes in Christ and relies on Him, they should not be doing "many bad things". Christ offers grace, healing and forgiveness to those who fall, so it is of the utmost importance that we believe in Him to keep us in line. Salvation is more important, as none is completely free of sin. Good deeds come with a true knowledge of Christ and the understanding that God is LOVE, and he allows us to experience compassion.
