Meteorite's hit the earth every day. I think what you are talking about is an apocolyptic event where a large meteorite will hit the earth, threatening life as we know it. This will definately happen one day, but nobody knows for sure when that will be. It could be next year or a hundred million years from now.

One will most likely hit the earth today, however the impact from these small objects is hardly cause for alarm. There is a group of scientist which scan the night skies looking for objects of concern. As of right now, there is no need to worry about a large meteor hitting the earth any time soon.

I take it you mean a major bolide strike? Small meteorites are relatively common (A few years back I've seen one myself come in over Norway and the meteorite landed in Greenland).

A major meteorite strike is unlikely to occur in a few years but, unless steps are taken in future to prevent such a thing, it will certainly happen in the future. It did happen in the early 20th. Century over Siberia when it is thought a small comet exploded over the Tungusta region, flattening thousands of square kilometres of taiga. The planet was lucky: half a day on that could have been Paris or London.

For the general effect of a major bolide strike though, the fictional account given in Rendezvous With Rama by Arthur C. Clarke still takes some beating:

The earth is hit by countless meteorites every day. If you asking about a large one, the near earth survey which looks for possible threats has found nothing yet

Meteors contact the earth on a regular basis, and become meteorites on impact. "The Big One" is a possibility, but we have no early warning signal.

Be ready when the time comes.
