LOL Lot of people in here obviously are not up on their weapons.
The 1860 "New Model Army" was made by Colt. It was a cap and ball revolver in 44 caliber and was the most popular handgun of the US Civil War. It could be fitted with a shoulder stock to improve accuracy. It had considerably more power than previous Colt models, such as the 1851 Colt Navy, which was a 38 caliber weapon. The ability to use more than one cylinder also was liked, as you could shoot six shots, pop out the cylinder, pop in a new fully loaded cylinder and fire six more shots. A very early form of speed loading.
This gun is sometimes confused with the Colt "Single Action Army" of wild west fame. The SSA was a cartridge gun firing the 45 Colt round.
ADDENDUM.. The New Model Army of British fame was just a recreation of the Roman Legions. When Rome fell, the idea of a standing army with well trained troops also disappeared. It was not until the "New Model Army" was developed did the idea of actually training troops and having a standing army returned to the world scene. It would have been more accurate to call it the "Old Model Army" in recognition of the Romans.

Because it was properly organised equipped and trained.Previous armies were raised by calling men to the Standard(flag) and ended up with a very small percentage of experienced troops. The new model army were so professional that some regiments are still in existance today in the British army.
