To make things easy.

The Operating System provides abstractions for other programs to work with, like files and disks.

Without an operating system, you would have to access all of the hardware at a very low level - implement your own file system, etc.

The operating system handles the menial jobs so that other programs can concentrate on something useful.

same way when you need an operation to function properly.

At the simplest level, an operating system does two things:
It manages the hardware and software resources of the system. In a desktop computer, these resources include such things as the processor, memory, disk space, etc. (On a cell phone, they include the keypad, the screen, the address book, the phone dialer, the battery and the network connection.)

It provides a stable, consistent way for applications to deal with the hardware without having to know all the details of the hardware.
The first task, managing the hardware and software resources, is very important, as various programs and input methods compete for the attention of the central processing unit (CPU) and demand memory, storage and input/output (I/O) bandwidth for their own purposes. In this capacity, the operating system plays the role of the good parent, making sure that each application gets the necessary resources while playing nicely with all the other applications, as well as husbanding the limited capacity of the system to the greatest good of all the users and applications.
The second task, providing a consistent application interface, is especially important if there is to be more than one of a particular type of computer using the operating system, or if the hardware making up the computer is ever open to change. A consistent application program interface (API) allows a software developer to write an application on one computer and have a high level of confidence that it will run on another computer of the same type, even if the amount of memory or the quantity of storage is different on the two machines.

Even if a particular computer is unique, an operating system can ensure that applications continue to run when hardware upgrades and updates occur. This is because the operating system and not the application is charged with managing the hardware and the distribution of its resources. One of the challenges facing developers is keeping their operating systems flexible enough to run hardware from the thousands of vendors manufacturing computer equipment. Today's systems can accommodate thousands of different printers, disk drives and special peripherals in any possible combination.

Because a computer is basically "dumb." Without the operating system, it wouldn't know how to open files, load programs, operate software or store files. A professor of mine explained it this way. A computer is like a very young child. You can't just tell it, "Cook me a pizza." You have to tell it, first, turn on the oven to 350 degrees. Then take the pizza out of the fridge. Next, open the box and take the plastic wrap off the pizza. Then, using oven mitts, place the pizza carefully in the hot oven. Then watch until it is cooked. Then turn the oven off and take it out. Then slice it up, put it on plates and bring it to me. A computer operating systems does the same thing.

You only need an operating system in a computer if you want it to work. If you want to use a computer as a paper weight, an operating system is unnecessary.

The operating system is a complex variety of instructions which tell the hardware elements how to handle the data on the various data busses and the routes to the cpu. Your computer is just a bunch of on/off switches and the operating system tells it what switches should be on or off at any given clock cycle.

The computer comes with the hardware. To make it work you need the software - the main thing is the operating system - then the accessories. The computer cannot act on its own - need the OS and the human to make it work.

Why do we need a soul to run a body. An OS is an soul of a computer. Otherwise you can run Command Prompt in computers without installing OS. But then you cant customize your computer. Your Tasks wont be easy you would have to learn a lot of commands. And the worst you wont be able to install any other Program. You wont be able to run simple programs like Note Pad, Word Pad, Ms Word. Your interference would compromise of colors Black and White with no Task Bar. Just Text Text Text Text, imagine NO COLORS, MUSIC, GRAPHICS.

BAD DREAM NA A COMPUTER WITHOUT A " OPERATING SYSTEM "

It is the code within the operating system that provies instuction that allows the componants of hardware to work together and software to exchange informatio through the hadware. Without it you basically have a bunch of parts.
