I think you answered it pretty good yourself...looks don't count. I have said " hey, you look okay to me" a few times, it seems to lessen that "awkward moment" to a more comfortable level.

Silence I guess, cuz I had a guy say that too me once. I was working collecting tickets. This one guy was loading luggage and was pretty close so he could hear what happened. The other employee says he'd load the luggage and that guy (me) would take your ticket. So he says "Oh this ugly guy here?". I just took the ticket and he got on. I asked the guy loading luggage (who was already looking at me) "did he just say what I thought he said", and yeah he heard it. He asked if I wanted him to go get him, I just said no, he probably is embarrassed because he didn't mean it to come out that way or something. I'm just kinda average looking, no one had ever directly called me ugly before, but then again if you are nice to people they typically won't call you ugly. I think he intended it to sound different or was just being facetious.

I have definately been in that situation, and as much as you can prepare from it, when the moment comes your mind goes blank. Generally you just end up doing an "oh you are so pretty! What are you talking about!" type of speech. Some of these people have been hideous. It is just the name of the game to compliment people so they feel good about themselves (and thing of at least one good attribute really really fast!)

People who REALLY feel unattractive don't talk about how they look. It's the ones who want attention who whine about being "fat" or "ugly". The best to deal with this is to just roll your eyes and say, "Yeah, you're a total dog." They'll stop whining when they realize that you won't participate in their game.

I think sometimes people need reassurance. I think no matter what you look like there are probably times everyone is hard on themselves. I know currently i am pregnant and i find myself asking my husband ALOT if i am getting to heavy, things of that sort. I know he will reassure me :-) Sometimes people need an extra boost to their spirits with some kind words.

they are probably just fishing for a compliment. if not, then they might be having some insecurity issues. if it's a constant thing, try to find out if it's a more serious problem than it seems. sometimes it's an underlying medical problem, especially if they are trying to lose too much weight, etc.

well.. ok.. perhaps u should focus to the inner side of that person.. i believe every person has his/her good side.. and if u're forced to say something, say something polite like.. "no.. i believe u're perfectly as u're, each of us is unique, no one will be prettier than the others, except u compare with the others"
i hope that'll work.

anytime a friend says to you, "I am ugly", say to them, "Beauty fades."
