I have adopted an abandoned dog that is around 10 years old. When she was found they foud out she had contracted filaria and had not been cured so the filaria had spread and reproduced already doing a lot of damage in lungs and heart. I was told the traditional cure for filaria which consists in two shots that kill the worms, was too dangerous to perform as the worms die and enter the blood stream and can cause a stroke . Now the dog caughs a lot ( she takes Fortekor + an antibiotic+lasix) and I don't know if it would be better to risk the operation at this point or anyone else has another advice for cure. Thank you so much

Get the shots and pray for the best. Humans can be infected by this worm too so you should be VERY careful handling your dog.

Good Luck,

I don't think I would risk the operation at this point. She is an older dog and it might be best to just make her comfortable. The treatment is very dangerous and there isn't another alternative. I'm sorry.

filaria (more specifically microfilaria) are baby heartworms in the blood.
