Like most kids, my son wants to be an Astronaut, Doctor, Photographer, Singer and an Astro-Physicist (Kidding about this one).
The thing is, I really want to know what are my sons interests and capabilities so I can best improve his talents and expand his knowledge in the right direction of his interest, which now (apparently) is a bit diversified.

THANKS

I don't think that you'd be "expanding" his knowledge by limiting what you're exposing him to. He's four. He doesn't need a "major." Yes, there are those kids who start composing symphonies when they're 2, or, at the less extreme end of the spectrum, start building with LEGOS at 4, decide it's their favorite thing in the world, and go on to be a world-class architect. But there's nothing wrong with having a child whose interests are more diversified. If you try to see a "specialty" that isn't there, and force the issue, he may miss out on new discoveries that lead to his real passion.
At four, I doubt he's holding out on you on what he likes. By your own observation--how he plays, what he chooses to play with, what types of books he likes--you will be given all the insight you need on how to guide him. And if you want to be more proactive, expose him to as much as possible: visit museums, read books on different subjects of interest to him, etc. But mostly, I'd say, let him be 4.

Watch and listen to him very carefully and you will be able to figure out what interests him and then leading him in that direction could result the the rewards, but know that parents often put the direction they like into the mind of the little ones and they reward you with saying they like something to please you, and they really are not too interested. e.g. our grandson was/and is quiet, polite and who would think he would love 'karate' because he is not agressive. But he was entered into classes and now at almost 6..his interest and focus is so good we can hardly believe it and he talks about being a 'sensui' and having his own school...but who knows, he also wants to be a zamboni driver at night..advice...direct them in the direction they are speaking of or are interested in at the moment, and then see where his creative juices go.

Observation. See what he excels at. Ask his preschool teacher. Ask your son. Follow his interests.

i watch my 3 1/2 year old when he is at play and see what he focuses on. in my opinion, it's too hard to tell at this point what they really excel at but i'm hoping it gets easier as they age.

race car driver, fireman, policeman, etc. He'll probably like Hotwheels or Matchbox cars. I know I did!
