The road traffic police can use the speed gun`s when ever & where ever they want with out prior notice !
The site`s you mention are not monitored by the police but by a local council speed enforcement officer and the do not need to advertise that they are going to be there on a certain day / time as long as there is speed restriction sign`s in place then they can just turn up !
Please do not listen to this nonesence about " has the gun been calibrated ) of course the gun has been calibrated it is a requirement for them to do so ,and there has only ever been one case in the last 10 year`s where it wasn`t calibrated and the offender got off on that technicallity , They are now calibrated like clockwork it will only cause you grief off the police if he / she think`s your being clever ! there is a good chance that with an officer you can explain the reason behind you speeding and most time`s they will give you a telling off .
You can`t do that with a speed camera / enforcement officer !

Where, when, and how the police can operate a radar/laser/speed camera is different from state to state. What is legal in one locale would be illegal in another per that state's traffic laws. There is no one answer that covers it all.

Yes, they can operate a speed check anywhere on the public highway - it's different from automatic cameras.

I think they can go anywhere they want to go if they think there is a potential hazard or if they are bored and they have nothing else to do!! Is there a citizens advise burro you can go to, maybe worth it can you imagine if you are able to fine the police the amount of dollar you will get from that??

They can operate them anywhere, but they have to inform the public in "some" way where they will be operating on any given day! Strange but true!

Yes. The only exception is on roads on which another police force has jurisdiction. Example: on a state highway or interstate, jurisdiction belongs to the state police, not the local police.
