A very subjective question: toast is so versatile the list could go on for ever, but to answer your question I have to say that the first thing to go on my toast is margarine, of the low fat variety.
What goes on next depends on both my mood and the time of day. If it's breakfast time it would be marmalade. I had a jar given to me for Christmas which is flavoured with whisky and is utterly scrumptious. If I fancy a bit of toast of an evening it'll be with Marmite, it leaves a strong taste so the wife would be less likely
to want a kiss at bedtime.
Now then, you haven't specified the bread you use for your toast.
It has to be thick - sliced and certainly not white. A good wholemeal loaf at least, but why stop there? Wholemeal granary is superb, unless of course you have false teeth, and nowadays you can get brown Danish bread which is equally acceptable and very healthy. I think I'll now ask a question about what people have in their coffee......

Yes, always spread it on when the toast is nearly cold, then the butter is nice and thick on top and doesn't melt and turn the toast soggy.
then, the final touch, a scraping of Marmite on top. Yum yum and double yum.
However, most Yahoo-ers will probably read this and squirm and mutter "yeeeeuk", since Marmite is something you either LOVE or HATE.
I love it.
Oooooooh, just typing this has made me hungry. Time to go down to the kitchen and make myself some toast and Marmite to enjoy. Bye now !

Butter on French Toast with Strawberry Preserves. The people south of the boarder like to put a small amount of refried beans on a French Roll half and pop it in the toaster oven. I know cause they did this a lot at the deli I worked.

My fav is lots of Brie on a French Roll hot out of the oven.

Cold butter (sliced and then chilled) on hot toast, very nice!

I also like spreading peanut butter or jam on bread, and then pop it into the oven toaster for a minute; the peanut butter turns a little crispy, and the jam becomes chewy.

homemade jam.
A friend from my church made a homemade jam, to sale for our church big event fund raising every year. It made with ripe figs, favorite gelatin and something else. I am a helping person where ever it needed. At the end when they didn’t sale all these jam, I bought every single jar of those jam for less than half price. They was sold for $ 5 a jar, but I got them for $2 a jar. I gave some of them away to friends and teachers for Christmas, and save some for myself. I ate it from the jar with a spoon. I know they will be good on toast.

I have butter and butter only on my rasin toast. Sometimes on plain toast i don't have butter if i am using peanut butter. A good combo there is peanut butter and tomato, trust me try it! It is delcicous, so is vegemite with honey.
