GO! Whatever the cost!
It was the most fantastic city that I had every seen. Although I am over 60 I had one on the most incredible time I had every experienced. New York has got to be one of the most safest and cheapest cities in the world. I lashed out and my son and I had 5 days in ‘Doubletree Guest Suites’ in the centre of Times Square.
I was never a lover of Americans and my son (who has visited USA many times) almost forced me go and I thank him so much for doing it.
I found the Americans fantastically friendly and nice people.
We went to top class and some seedy venues and had a great time.
I met the most incredible people from all categories and was very impressed with their politeness.
I will return!

I've just come back and it wasn't expensive. We got flights with Continental, from Gatwick for £264 each and stayed at the Milford Plaza Hotel which is on 45th and 8th (not 49th as someone else has said!) We paid $811 including tax for a room with 2 double beds - thats about £420 by today's exchange rates. So less than £500 each for 5 nights. We live on Guernsey so have to fly to London first before we can go anywhere else so I sympathise with you being in Scotland. We booked directly with Continental.com for our flights and the Milfordplaza.com for our hotel. You don't need to go for 3 weeks, 5 nights is the minimum for a first visit but you can do a lot in that time. This was my fifth trip and I never get tired of the place - you should go.....

You must visit New York, it's the most fantastic city in the World. But go towards the end of April, for some reason it's at least £1000 cheaper for that week. I've been several times now at that particular time and was amazed at how much cheaper it was to go then. Good luck and have a fab time. You will find that one week will be sufficient to see all the sights.

While the plane fare will be expensive, once you're in New York, you'll find it much cheaper than most European cities--particularly with the current rate of exchange. You can also save money a number of ways. New York has excellent public transportation. You can buy a weekly pass for the subway for just $24. You can also save money on lodging by staying at hotels outside the city center, particularly those in Queens or New Jersey. Prices there are often half what they'd be in Manhattan. Most of the museums have offer at least one night a week with free admission; check their websites for details.

Go for one week first. the go again some other time. My wife and I have been twice since April 2006. NY is the best place we've ever been. Go to www.expedia.co.uk and after entering dates, number of persons, etc it'll give you about 200 hotels to choose from. You can sort by price, but be careful of too cheap - you'll be MILES from the city.
Might I recommend then Milford Plaza Hotel at W49th Street and 8th Avenue?

have a look at expedia for a flight, that would be your biggest expense, if money is tight the cheapest option is to stay in a youth hostel, youll meet lots of people there, i was there for new year and stayed at a red roof inn at seacaucus, its a bus ride from manhatten with a reliable bus service every hour, always on time! and averages about $50a night, and it wont take you 3 weeks to see the sights, you can do it in a few days depending on what you really want to see and how fast you can walk!

it is not that expensive to visit nyc these days. we went for new years and got return flights for 350 and three nights for 170, centre of manhaten over new years. google cheap flights new york and see what comes back. although you'll have to add costs to get to a major airport. you can see all the sites in ten days as well. it's the best city i've ever been to.

See if you can rent a place on www.newyork.craigslist.org
You can also stay in a hotel in NJ and take the train into NYC. Also hotels in Brooklyn and Queens are cheaper than hotels in Manhattan and you can still take the subway into Manhattan
