We Sleep because our brain functions all day long and it needs to rest. Its same thing like if you stand all day long, our feets need to rest. Our Body requires us to be asleep while it works on process such as Proper Blood circulation, Rejuvination etc. These things dont happen when we are awake. Thats how God has Functioned us.

There's actually (like everything thing in psychology!) lots of different theories to why we sleep, none of which have been proven as the 'correct' and all of which probably have some truth in them.
Some people believe that we sleep to rejuvinate our bodies. To help rebuild strength, in our mind and body. This is clearly supported by the fact we get more tired and feel we need sleep if we do lots of heavy exercise or have a stressful day. However we don't usually sleep more in these cases, suggesting it's not the only pure purpose of sleep.
Evolutionarily, it is thought we slept to protect ourselves. A person who is a sleep is still, and therefore can easily be hidden. We slept at night because this is when we were most vunerable. Of course things like snoring and the fact that asleep we are open to attack, do seem to dispell this theory, although it does give a good reason for sleep in the past.
Another theory is that we sleep to help our brains absorb and arrange the information we have learnt and taken in during the day. This is supported by the fact that babies sleep alot, suggesting that it's because they are constantly taking in new information at a young age and therefore need the sleep to process this information.
Any simple yahoo search of your question will likely also give you many many other theories, those these are some of the most common ones and the ones i can remember of top of my head!
Whatever the reason it is proven that we do need sleep, and studies on sleep deprivation show the great affects of people not sleeping. It's pretty interesting stuff.

It is for mental activities such as problem solving so we need that part to continue living :D You can realize that a person who did not sleep for 2 days starts to act unlogical most of the time .
